JONESBOROUGH - Tony Lee Smith, 71, of Jonesborough, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at N.H.C in Johnson City.

He was born in Johnson City on December 6, 1954, to Jack A. Smith and Velma Malone Smith. Tony became a lifelong resident of Jonesborough. He was a member of the "Jonesborough Presbyterian Church."

Those left to cherish his memory are his brother, Larry A. Smith; sister, Cheryl S. Smith; very special nephews, Jason Chadwick "Chad" Dykes, Dr. Bert J. Smith (Christy) both of Jonesborough, and Charles Landon "Chuck" Smith (Vanessa of Sioux Falls, SD; very special great-nephews, Jesse Dykes, and Joseph Dykes, both of Jonesborough; very special great-nieces, Meredith Smith Anglin (Pate), Addie Smith, Andrea Smith, and Ellie Smith, all of Jonesborough; very special great-nephew, Ezra Smith, of Jonesborough and several extended family and friends.

Tony's senior class was the first graduating class from the new David Crockett High School. While in high school, his summer vacations and some weekends were spent working for his father's construction business. He learned valuable skill sets for what residential and commercial construction entails. after high school he enrolled and later graduated from East Tennessee State University. While at ETSU, he belonged to the fraternity "Pi Kappa Phi." Also, while attending ETSU, he worked part-time for his fathers convenience store the "Golden Owl" in Jonesborough. In his late 20's and early 30's he worked for "General Shale" in Kingsport. He helped supervise and manage the brickyard. During Tony's late 30's and early 40's, he started with "Terry Greenwell's Surveying Company" and remained there through the mid to late 90's. In the mid 2000's Tony started working for Billy Young at his "Custom Cabinet & Furniture Shop" in Boones Creek, near Rockingham Boat Dock, In the 2020's, he did woodworking projects of his own as well as special orders, sold antiques, and attended gun shows as a vendor.

Tony's musical interests were "George Jones' 70's and 80's Country Music" and the "Rolling Stones." He also traveled frequently as he attended numerous "Dave Friday & His Band's" performances.

Tony loved being in the great outdoors. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and camper and he loved teaching others and sharing his knowledge. He loved being on the lake where he could go boating or skiing. Tony was also very interested in putting out a large vegetable garden each year and he would always share part of what he had grown with family and friends. He was keenly interested in going to antique auctions. Tony also liked participating in muzzleloader competitions, where through the years he earned several medals and trophies. He was also a member of "Ducks Unlimited."

Tony had a big heart, a very kind heart, a heartwarming smile, and a very generous nature. He had a very quick wit and a keen sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his family and close friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Staff of N.H.C. of Johnson City, for being so very kind to Tony, their most outstanding care, and their attentiveness to his needs each day.

A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, April 24, 2026, at Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery - 2165 Happy Valley Rd. Limestone, TN 37681. Family and close friends are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:45 PM.

Dear Cheryl, Larry and Family,
I am very saddened to learn of Tony´s passing. Tony and I were friends from our high school days. We stayed connected throughout the years. A lot of our conversations were about your Dad Jack. A lot of laughter was shared. I´ll miss him.
