John Kenneth "Ken" Howerton, born May 18, 1937, in Grainger County, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, February 20, 2026. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, John Herman Howerton and Adilado Henegar Howerton; his beloved wife, Elizabeth Claudette Howerton; and two brothers, Richard Hugh Howerton and Edward Howerton.
Ken retired as an insurance agent, a job he excelled at for more than 42 years. He served in the United States Army Reserves and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Elizabethton. Ken was an exceptional father and grandfather and loved all sports, especially University of Tennessee sports. Ken coached basketball, football and baseball for several youth programs in the area and was involved in starting the Stoney Creek Youth Club.
Those left to cherish Ken's memory include his children, Gina Howerton Fritts of Johnson City, Tennessee and Brady Kenneth Howerton and wife Cena of Rutledge, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Joshua Daniel Fair, Cody Blaine Fair, Seth Kenneth Howerton, and Kara Annette Howerton; and five great grandchildren, Avery Fair, Reid Fair, Evan Fair, Aiden Blevins and Chase Blevins.
A service to honor Ken's life will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday, February 26, 2026 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Reverend Ray Amos, Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends between the hours of 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Thursday.
The committal and entombment will follow in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Josh Fair, Cody Fair, Pat Little, Scott Fulkerson, Andy Parris and Darrell Fair. Seth Howerton (grandson) and Richie Burrow (friend) will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the Carter County Animal Shelter, 135 Sycamore Shoals Drive, Elizabethton, TN 37643 in honor of Ken.
