Mona Bowen Blakely Barron passed away peacefully on October 27, 2023, at the age of 91. Born on February 11, 1932, in Clinton, South Carolina, she was the beloved daughter of the late Augustus and Margaret Blakely. Mona graduated from high school in Clinton, South Carolina and attended Erskine College earning her Bachelor of Arts Degree. She later performed graduate work at East Tennessee State University.
Mona was loved deeply by her family and her many friends, and she will be greatly missed. Mona was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the wife of a minister. Her faith showed through her work in the church and the kindness and compassion she bestowed on all who knew her. Mona served her community for thirty-four years as a career educator and librarian. She was recognized many times for the excellence she exhibited in the classroom and in the library and her love for her students. She was named Teacher of the Year for Unicoi County.
Mona is survived by her husband of over 71 years, Rev. Dr. Earle P. Barron Jr, and her three daughters Margaret Barron Covington and husband Dwight of Greenville, S.C., Dr. Sarah Elizabeth Barron and husband Sen. Rusty Crowe of Johnson City, TN, and Catherine Anne Barron and husband James Goad of Johnson City, TN. Mona was an amazing and loved "Grandmama." She delighted in her five grandchildren, Matthew Covington and wife Susan, Patrick Covington and wife Louise, Andrew Covington, Dr. Katie Broyles and husband Jordan, and John Crowe; and her great-grandchildren Gus, Annie, and Emilia. She treasured her special friendship with Denise and Larry Rose who were like family to her.
The family would like to thank the staff of Governor's Bend Assisted Living, and the Director of Nursing at Hillview Health Rehabilitation Center, Kristi Hensley, and her staff for their loving and supportive care.
Celebration of Life Services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 12, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church in Johnson City with Rev. Paul Helphinstine officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 P.M. on Sunday prior to the service. Inurnment services will follow for immediate family.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Unicoi County Imagination Library or Saint Jude's Children Research Hospital in memory of Mona Blakely Barron.
