Mary Helen Clayton Hampton

January 27, 2026

JOHNSON CITY - Mary Helen Clayton Hampton, age 88, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Mrs. Hampton was a native of Louisville, Kentucky and daughter of the late Lydia Jane Orms Gutermuth and John P. Gutermuth.

Mary graduated from Du Pont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky.

She enjoyed gardening, reading, and loved her pets. Mary was a long-time member of Central Batist Church in Johnson City since 1972, where her husband had served as the Minister of Music.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hampton was preceded in death by: her loving husband of 53 years, David Edward Hampton; four brothers, James Earl Clayton, William Lovell Clayton, Robert Neal Clayton, and Richard Paul Clayton; step-brother, John Phillip Guthermuth; and step-sister, Kathryn Mercer.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include: her children, Melodee Lyn (Walker) Holland, and David Douglas (Karen) Hampton; grandchildren, David Walker (Angel) Holland, Hannah Elizabeth (Cody) Woodward, and Caleb (Lindsey) Hampton; and several great-grandchildren.

A graveside service for Mrs. Hampton is scheduled for 2:00pm Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Pastor Paul Farrior will be officiating the service. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:50pm.
