Janice Greene Obituary

Janice Rhea Greene

February 15, 2026

JOHNSON CITY - Janice Rhea Greene, age 77, of Johnson City, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2026, at her home.

From Johnson City her parents are the late Everett and Lillie Barlow Horton, Janice was a member of Skyline Heights Baptist Church and lived her beliefs daily through steady devotion and kindness to others.

She loved staying active and spending time outdoors. An avid tennis player, she rarely passed up a chance to be on the court. She also took pride in her yard and could often be found mowing the lawn or working outside, keeping everything neat and well cared for.

She had a creative side and enjoyed painting, often sharing her artwork with family and friends. Music was another part of her life - she played the guitar and loved to sing.

More than anything, she loved her family. They were her priority and her greatest joy. She also had a special place in her heart for her dogs, Ellie Mae and Lucy, who were constant companions.

In addition to her parents, Janice is preceded in death by her husband, Hobie Earl Greene, and sister, Linda Faye Horton.

Those left behind to cherish her memory include her children, James L. Greene (Libby), Melissa Bennett (Bobby); Grandchildren, Matthew Greene (Samantha), Storm Bennett (Kasha), Stone Bennett (Arianna), and Steele Bennett (Shay) great-grandchildren, Owen Greene, Meah Greene, and Arlo Bennett; and brother, Everette Loran Horton, Jr. (Barbara).

A funeral service will be held for Janice on Monday, February 23, 2026, at 1:00pm in the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City, with Pastor Donald Page officiating. The visitation period will begin at 11:00 am and will continue until the service hour.

A graveside committal service will be held at 2:00pm in Mountain Home National Cemetery, Historic Side. Pallbearers will be Matthew Greene, Storm Bennett, Stone Bennett, Steele Bennett, Koby Franklin, Kelin Franklin, John Harvey, Jimmy Roe, Jerry Roe and Ron Sutphin.

In loving memory for a wonderful person who will be loved and missed. We've known Janice and her late husband Hobie for nearly 40 years, and their children and grandchildren. Hobie and I worked at the V.A. Medical Center, and we first met on the tennis courts at Liberty Bell. Shortly after that, Janice was my mixed doubles partner, and Brenda was Hobie's partner. Janice and Brenda would become a formidable women's doubles team, along with Hobie and I in men's doubles. There were no organized tennis programs in the Tri-Cities area, so we started the V.A. Tennis League, open to everyone. There was only a couple dozen of us in the beginning, but we grew to over 200 players. A few years later, the four of us, along with a handful of other players from Bristol and Kingsport formed the Mountain Empire Tennis Association. I transferred to the V.A in Indianapolis until I retired so I didn't keep up with the tennis scene in J.C. The bottom line to this stroll down memory lane is, if you are or were playing organized tennis in JC, Janice played an active role in this expansion of tennis in the greater Tri-Cities area, which many folks are not aware. You will always live in our hearts; the time the four of spent on and off the tennis courts will be cherished forever.

I am so sorry to learn of Janice Greene's passing. I saw her not long ago in the grocery story and we talked about 30 minutes. She always seemed to be happy and a smile on her face. My heart goes out to the family during this difficult time. God bless and keep each of you. RIP

Janice was the cutest, happiest, friendly lady I knew. Grew up in the same neighborhood and enjoyed seeing her out in her yard, wasn't that long ago i saw her at food city, we talked and talked and talked. Gonna miss driving by her house and the front door not being open. Heaven sure has a pretty angel. Rest in peace Janice.

I wasn´t fortunate enough to know Janice for many years but the few years that I did know her, she made such an impression on me. She loved her family and her fur babies with a full heart and treated everyone including myself and my husband like family. She will be sorely missed.
