ELIZABETHTON - James Hopson, 93, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2023 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Avery County, North Carolina, he was a son of the late William & Callie Perkins Hopson. He had lived most of his life in Carter County. He was a retired employee of Tri State Container after 37 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Melissa Shell Hopson, by a daughter: Mary Millera; brother Mack Alvin Hopson and three half-brothers. James sang with the Grace Quartet for several years. He was a member of Borderview Christian Church.
Survivors include two daughters: Janice Hopson (Jimmy) Brewer and JoAnn Hopson (Jody) Crowe; three grandchildren: Jonathan (Diannie) Crowe, Jordan (Craig) Emmert and Christina (Jackie) Hodge; five great-grandchildren, and his four-legged buddy, "Jake".
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Scott Fisher, Minister officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 30, 2023 in the Perkins Cemetery (Upper Shell Creek), Roan Mountain. Music will be provided by Ray Don Markland and Scott Reynolds. Active pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Friday will be; Wayne Shell, Jonathan Crowe, Mike Hopson, Dillard Whitehead, T.J. Crowe and Dexter Perkins. Honorary pallbearers will be his church family. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of 3rd Floor, and the ER Staff at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.
