Evelyn Cawthorn Barningham

JOHNSON CITY-Evelyn Cawthorn Barningham, 87, of Johnson City, TN, went to her eternal home with Jesus on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2025, at Johnson City Medical Center after several years of struggling with dementia. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Isaac and Gladys Cawthorn.

Evelyn was born in Cusseta, GA on Sept. 28, 1938, shortly after her parents moved to where she grew up in Blountstown, FL. From 1957-1960 she attended FSU and received her bachelor's degree in music education. In 1960, she met Wayne Barningham and married 2/4/1961. Settling in Leesburg, FL, she taught music for over 30 years primarily at Fruitland Park Elementary. Evelyn enjoyed producing numerous concerts with her students as well as directing the choir at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Her passion for music came at a very early age and she was joyfully singing all the time.

After retirement, she and Wayne traveled in their RV all over the US and 7 provinces of Canada. Then in July of 2000 they relocated to Jonesborough, TN. Evelyn never ceased an opportunity to meet people and to get to know them personally. She valued people and wrote almost 100 personalized poems for peoples' birthdays or special occasions. She was known for her hospitality and delicious cooking. One of her specialties was fruitcake that was shared throughout the year. Evelyn's character was that of a peacemaker, a prayer warrior, encourager and a teacher of God's Word. She had great patience, always steadfast in her faith.

Evelyn will be remembered and sorely missed by many! She is survived by her husband, Wayne Barningham; her daughter, Judy Atiles (Efrain); her granddaughters, Sarah Rayna (Justin) and Rebekah Harris (Craig) and 5 great grandchildren, Alaysia Rayna, Judah Rayna, Malachi Rayna, Aubrey Harris and Caleb Harris.

Family will receive friends at Tetrick Funeral Services in Johnson City, TN on Friday, January 9, 2026 from 5:00-6:00pm. A ceremony will follow at 6:00pm with Reverend Tony Martin officiating.
