Betty Chappell Steed, 86, Lakeland, TN, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 8, 2025. She was of Christian faith and a member of Highland Heights Presbyterian Church, Cordova, TN.
Betty was born in Johnson County, TN to the late Oscar W. and Anna T. Brinkley Chappell.
She attended East Tennessee State University where she obtained a bachelors in English and History and a Masters in Library Science. She taught in Washington County, TN schools for 32 years. She retired as Librarian from Davy Crocket High School in 2001.
Betty was known for her kind, loving, caring, and humorous personality. Her departure leaves an unfillable void in the lives of those that knew her. She loved feeding the birds, reading, shopping, and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by sister Pegge Chappell Baughcum and her brother Billy Chappell Sr.
She is survived by her beloved daughters Audrey (Thornton) Cline and Andra (Catherine) Steed; grandchildren Alex Cline and Mollie (Michael) Shield; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Monday, November 24th, 2025. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm prior to the service at Hux & Lipford Funeral Home in Mountain City, TN. A graveside service will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Libre Indian School, Ashland, MT 59004
