JOHNSON CITY - The spirit of Sherry Harrison, 79, transcended this world on September 2, 2023, while a resident of NHC Healthcare in Johnson City, TN.
She was the daughter of the late Charles and Evelyn Carrier Fleming of Bluff City, TN. She was a graduate of Bluff City High School. From 1962 – 1966 Sherry attended East Tennessee State University, where she graduated with a BS Degree in physical education. She was an active member of Kappa Delta sorority and a member of the ROTC Sponsor Corps. After graduation she married and moved to Greeneville, TN where she became a member of several civic and social clubs. In 1970, she began teaching physical education at Eastview Elementary School. While there, she brought home the system wide field day trophy for many years.
After her divorce in 1978, she then married fellow teacher, Charles Harrison, and the couple took residence in Jonesborough, TN. They welcomed a son into their lives in October of 1979. In 1980, they purchased The Old Sweet Shop, where Sherry started a very successful luncheon business. In 1984, Sherry and a partner along with two artists opened The Blue Iris Tea Room and Gallery, which enjoyed a great following for several years. In 1986 Sherry and Charles purchased a condo in the old school at the top of the hill on West Main, Academy Hill.
Though Sherry returned to teaching at Ashley Academy in Johnson City, in 1987, she also started a catering business called Caviar Catering, out of her home. In 2000 Sherry and her family moved to the area of Boone Lake near Sonny's Marina. She closed her catering business and retired from teaching in 2006, after 19 years of service. Many wonderful memories and tragedies would be marked during the twenty years living at the lake, before Sherry had to take up residence at NHC in Johnson City in 2020.
Sherry was preceded in death by her only son, Justin Charles Flemming Harrison along with several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Harrison of the home; daughter by another mother, Sophia Harrison (Hardy Wickert); granddaughters, Helena, and Lea Harrison; special cousin, Sandy Niddifer Smith; brother-in-law, Robert Harrison; sister-in-law, Jennie Harrison Dingess (Lan Dingess); and several other cousins.
A special thank you goes out to the administration of NHC for three and a half years of loving, compassionate care. As Sherry's spouse, I can only say that you will be lovingly remembered and appreciated.
