Roger Bailey Obituary

Dr. Roger Carlton Bailey

January 4, 2025

JOHNSON CITY - Dr. Roger Carlton Bailey, 83, Johnson City, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2025, at his residence.

He was born in Bluefield, WV and was a son of the late Woodrow and Beulah Ann Graybeal Bailey.

Roger received his undergraduate degree from Concord University in West Virginia. He went on to receive his master's degree from West Virginia University. Roger continued his education at Oklahoma State University where he received his PhD, Doctorate in Psychology. He holds academic degrees in social psychology and clinical psychology. Roger taught at both Concord University (5 years) and Oklahoma University (2 years). He then moved to Johnson City to teach at ETSU, where he stayed for 31 years. Roger retired from the Psychology Department at ETSU in 2004. He contributed to several Psychology textbooks, wrote, and co-wrote several books during his career and in retirement.

He had many interests and hobbies. Roger loved writing songs and poems. He played guitar in two rock and roll bands, The Pagans and The Blue Chords. Roger was an avid golfer and loved to play golf with his sons and grandsons. He coached his sons in basketball, golf, and soccer.

Roger was an active member, for over 50 years at First United Methodist Church in Johnson City. He was an usher and Sunday School teacher. Roger loved studying the bible, so it was only fitting he was a guest speaker at Wednesday night services.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his sons, Brad and Evan Bailey.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Barbara Bailey; sons, Brian Bailey (Martha), Eric Bailey (Kim); grandchildren, Natalie, Julian, Alyssa, and Gavin Bailey; brother, Kent Bailey (Patty).

The funeral service for Roger will be conducted Thursday, January 9, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. from the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City with Jason Myers, officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The graveside committal service will be held Friday, January 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in Washington County Memory Gardens. Those who wish to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m. on Friday.

In-lieu-of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org.

We knew Dr. Roger Bailey through our Church (FUMC), his teaching our daughters in Sunday School and college, our teaching his boys in church and school, serving on church committees and listening to his stories and hearing his songs. Roger was a compassionate, caring individual always displaying dignity, respect and professionalism. He was an integral part of our community and will be missed! Our prayers are with the family for God´s Grace, Mercy and Peace. Jim and Pam Heaton

How saddened we were to hear of Roger´s passing. I can almost see him now in Heaven playing his guitar with a pen in hand. Roger influenced both my sons greatly and positively through his teachings in their Sunday school classes. I remember Roger as a friend who always wanted to know how I was doing. He was kind, compassionate, very intelligent and witty. Our prayers and love are with his lovely wife Barbara and all his family. May your memories bring back a smile to your faces in the days ahead.
