Robert Britton Obituary

Robert Kyle (Bob) Britton

July 19, 1937 -

December 7, 2024

JOHNSON CITY - Robert Kyle (Bob) Britton, of Johnson City, passed away on December 7, 2024, at the Johnson City Medical Center, after a short illness. He was born in Washington County, TN on July 19, 1937, he was one of four sons born to Kyle and Mary McCall Britton. Preceding him in death were his parents and brothers, Johnny Mac Britton and Charles (Tom) Britton.

Left to remember him is his special friend, Judy Sparks, brother, Mike and Pam Britton; children, Kathy Billings and Les, Robin Murray and Shane, and Tim Britton and Julie; grandchildren: Ashley Zale and David, Hunter Murray, Timothy Alan Britton II (TAB) and Ashlyn, Aaron Billings and Cassidy, Andy Britton and twin brother Ben Britton and Gracie, and Jonathan Murray; 11 great-grandchildren.

After graduating from Jonesboro Highschool in 1955, Bob's career excelled as the owner of Westside Exxon and Wrecker Service. It can be said that he "taught most of Johnson City how to drive a wrecker." Bob continued his career at Brown's Mill Towing and TN Motor's. Additionally, he was a proud member of the United States Army Reserves.

Imagine being one of his children back in the sixties being brought to school in a wrecker. Bob's career in the service of many Washington County residents garnered him many friends and acquaintances. He was especially familiar with the recovery of his grandchildren and their vehicles. As one grandson recalled, his vehicle stopped on Market Street and he hailed his grandfather for assistance. Soon after arriving, Bob quickly diagnosed the problem. As the grandson recalled, Bob told him "It needs gas in it to run."

Known as a loving father, Bob spent his spare time as a coach of the Civitan Little League and was a past member of the Lions Club. He excelled in fishing, often taking the family on the water and refining his craft. As a man of few words, Bob had a sense of humor that few would have the pleasure of hearing. After one such outing, whereby one grandchild asked about catching turtles and ended up catching sticks, Bob referred to him as a "log fisher."

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, in Onks Cemetery, 4160 Old Jonesborough Rd. Jonesborough, TN, with Rev. Mike Fenner officiating. Pall bearers will be selected from the family.

Bob was a good man and a great driver. Bob worked for me at Brows Mill for many years. He really took pride in his craft and was as a dependable employee as a company could ever ask for. Great man and good friend Rest in peace my brother.
