Rebecca Lavoie Obituary

Rebecca "Sue" Mast Lavoie, a woman of God and believer in Jesus Christ as her path to salvation, at age 101 years entered the 'Church Triumphant' at sunrise on Thursday, January 11, 2024. Sue was born in the family's home on their farm at Zionville, Watauga County, North Carolina, to the late Adam Newton and Rebecca Isaacs Mast as the last of their thirteen children.

Sue is preceded in death by her husband, Herbert J. Lavoie and siblings May, Emma, Daisy, Ray, Robert, Joe, Clay, Clint, Pearl, Grace, Fred, Mildred, and J.D. and respective spouses. Sue is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces, and great-great nephews.

Sue graduated from Cove Creek High School as a member of the Class of 1939 and from Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University) in Boone, North Carolina as a member of the Class of 1943.

She began her professional career in Detroit, Michigan to which several of her siblings had relocated. It was in Detroit she met Mr. Lavoie, an employee of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation. The Lavoies were relocated to Washington, D.C., where Mr. Lavoie completed his career with the FBI. The Lavoies retired to Statesville, North Carolina where Sue was active in the First Baptist Church serving as a member of the Chancel Choir and was honored by the Davis Regional Medical Center for her 8,000 volunteer hours.

Subsequent to Mr. Lavoie's death in Statesville, Sue moved to an independent living apartment at Appalachian Christian Village in Johnson City, Tennessee in March 2012 to be near to family members, and "never looked back". She remained in independent living until her death. Sue's time in Johnson City was filled with worship at Central Baptist Church, shopping trips to the clothing stores at the Johnson City Mall, bingo at ACV and the other numerous activities planned for the residents of 'The Village'. Sue availed herself of every opportunity to shop!

The family of Sue Lavoie extends their sincere gratitude to Sue's 'sitters' for their loving care of Sue; Brenda, Missy, Jenny, and Pat. These 'sitters' never sat; they were always filling Sue's life with adventures.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Rebecca Sue Lavoie will be held Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 1:00 pm in the chapel at Abundant Christian Living Community, 2012 Sherwood Drive, Johnson City, TN 37601. A reception hosted by the family will follow the service.

The interment will take place at the Mountlawn Memorial Park and Gardens of Boone, North Carolina as weather allows. Notice will be provided.

Prayers for Sue's family. We met Sue and Herb at the bowling alley what a wonderful family they were. Sue was so sweet and happy with a beautiful smile. We left Statesville and quit bowling and loss contact but still have our memories of Sue and Herb.
