ERWIN - Oscar Edmond "Mick" Bergendahl, Jr., age 90, Erwin, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus on Friday, December 15, 2023. He was born in the family homeplace on Love Street in Erwin, Tennessee on December 17, 1932. Mick was the only son of the late Oscar Edmond Bergendahl, Sr. and Cora Emma Cuddy Bergendahl. Mr. Bergendahl was affectionately known as Mick, Mickey, Pop, and Pappaw.
Mick graduated from Unicoi County High School having lettered in football and basketball. After he graduated from Unicoi County High School, Mick continued his education at Wake Forest College in Wake Forest, North Carolina. He received his BS Degree in Business from East Tennessee State College in Johnson City.
Mick began his career as an Electrician Apprentice with the Clinchfield Railroad in Erwin. He was dedicated to Christian mentorship so, he accepted a CEO position with the YMCA where he began a forty-year career in Toledo, Ohio then going to Annapolis, Maryland before returning to Erwin, Tennessee.
After retiring in his hometown of Erwin, Mick found his second passion as a Clock Smith known as the "Clock Doc." He was the owner and operator of Happy Hour Clock Shop in Johnson City for twenty years. Mick retired again in 2013 to devote his care to his loving wife of seventy years, Jean Bergendahl, and family.
He was a faithful and active member of Centenary United Methodist Church for many years.
In addition to his parents, Mick was preceded in death by his wife of seventy years, Betty Jean Tittle Bergendahl on June 05, 2022; one son, O.E. "Eddie" Bergendahl, III; grandson, Matthew Bergendahl Willis; five sisters: Theda Snyder, Catherine Jones, Thelma Lundy, Elleen Cairy, and Mary Frances Simmons.
Mick leaves behind his four children: James "Jimmie" Bergendahl (Winnie), Michael "Mike" Bergendahl (Donna), all of Johnson City, Scott Bergendahl (LuAnne) of Erwin and Susan "Sue" Benny (Will) of Pasadena, Maryland; daughter-in-law, Wendie Bergendahl of Meadville, Pennsylvania; ten grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The Bergendahl family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church. Reverend Linda Rozar will officiate the 3:00 p.m. celebration of life service. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Bergendahl, Mike Bergendahl, Scott Bergendahl, Erwin Rassmusson, Harry Lewis, Marvin Rogers, and United Methodist Men. A private family committal will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in memory of Mick to: Centenary United Methodist Church, 203 North Elm Street, Erwin, TN 37650 and/or YMCA, 601 Love Street, Erwin, TN 37650.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Mick's close friends Erwin and Rose Rasmusson, his friends, and staff of Governor's Bend for the special loving care given to him and the entire family.
