Dr. Mark Allan Howell Sepember 9, 1951 - August 21, 2024
Dr. Mark Allan Howell, aged 72, passed away on August 21, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. He was a beloved physician, husband, father, grandfather "Pop Pop," and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Mark was born on September 9th, 1951, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but spent his formative years in Chattanooga, TN. He graduated from Hixson High School and went on to attend University of Tennessee Chattanooga for undergraduate studies and University of Tennessee Health Science Center for his medical degree and Otolaryngology residency training. In 1984, after completing his medical training, Mark moved to Johnson City to join ENT Associates as a head and neck surgeon. Throughout his career, Mark was known for his hard work, dedication, and compassion. His kindness and bedside manner as a physician was unmatched.
In addition to his passion for medicine, Mark was a devoted husband and father. He met the joy of his life, Jane Huskey while working in Chattanooga between medical school and residency. They married in 1982 and had three beautiful children whom he adored with all of his heart. He was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement, no matter what challenges they faced.
In his free time, Mark enjoyed being outside, biking, hiking, listening to music, and spending time with his family. Mark was always eager to share his knowledge and enthusiasm with others. Mark served in leadership roles at both Johnson City Medical Center and Franklin Woods Hospital. He also loved serving as a volunteer for United Servants Abroad on yearly mission trips to Peru to treat underserved communities. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served as a Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent in his time there.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents Robert "Bob" and Marie Howell and his sister, Robbyn Farris. He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Howell, his children, Laura Howell (Teague Holmes), Sarah Ritchie (Mike Ritchie), Zachary Howell (Christy Howell) and his six grandchildren, Anniston, Bentley, Grayson, Brooklyn, Harper, and Emmy Jane.
We want to thank our community for all of their love and support through the time of Mark's illness. We want to give a special thanks to the physicians and staff at ENT Associates for all of their help and love. In addition, we are so grateful to our faithful caregivers who were so diligent in providing Mark with everything he needed. Also, a special thank you to the SOFHA providers Dr. Moulton, Dr. Johnson, and Megan Long who took such wonderful care of Mark.
A service is planned in Johnson City, TN Saturday, September 7, 2024. Visitation will be 1:00-3:00pm with a service at 3:00pm at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Johnson City. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City from 5:00 - 7:00pm after the service.

When I was a young nurse I worked with Dr Howell and watched through the years as he cared for his patients. He worried about them and saved many lives. I think of him frequently and hope his children realize they have a lot to live up to!
God Bless Mark Howell for his dedication and leadership.

So thankful for this fine gentleman's care throughout not only my childhood but also my children's. Also for his friendship with my entire family and taking care of my mom, Judy who was his nurse for most of my young life. I know he will be greatly missed by so many people especially his family who he loved so much.

Dr Howell operated on my husband. He was suppose to be in a tournament. He came in and took Chuck's stitches out. He was so good to him. My husband passed away when he was 52. I tried ti get a card to Dr Howell but couldn't get an address. He did love my husband. We talked about him when he took my granddaughter's tonsils out. He was the most compassionate doctor for his patients. So kind and caring. He would come in and sit down and act like you were the only patient he had. I am so sorry for your family. This community has lost a remarkable man that truly loved his patients. May God bless all of you and give you strength and understanding. Sharon. CULLER

Howell Family, my condolences on the passing of Dr. Howell. A warm and kind physician who worked hard to find the problem and repair it.
He repaired my deviated nose septum and 6 years later repaired my daughter's septum. His caring nature was welcomed as much as his talent.
Peace of Christ to all,
Melissa
