JOHNSON CITY - Lawrence Eugene "Gene" Weemes, age 92, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, a son of the late William Mark Weemes and Blanche Lucille Hawke Weemes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline McCabe; one nephew, Mark Orren; and one niece, Linda Orren.

Gene was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a lifelong member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church where he loved singing in the choir and attending the former H.T. Rich Sunday School Class and currently the Good News Sunday School Class. He was a Customer Service Representative with the Johnson City Power Board where he retired with 35 years of service. Until their passing, Gene cared for his parents at their family home. He enjoyed singing with the Johnson City Men's Ensemble, bowling, gardening and working in his flowers. He loved going out to eat where he was known for meeting a group of friends at the Mall and was able to eat at the majority of restaurants in town.

He is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Peggy Weemes Humphreys and husband John; four nieces, Karen Orren Tester and husband Anthony, Sandi Dahl and husband Billy, Barbara Brown and husband Scott, and Alesia Orren; two great nieces, Jordan Tester and Juliana Humphreys; six great nephews, Clint Tester, Luke Orren, Will Orren, Seth Orren, Satchel Dahl, and Nicholas Brown; one step niece, Kimberly Ladd and husband Shane; one step nephew, Kerry Humphreys and wife Carolyn; two cousins, Lois Rosser and Sandy Rosser; and two special friends who were very helpful to him, Wanda and Dave Trulove.

The family will receive friends Thursday, May 15, 2025 from 11:30 AM until 1:00 PM at Monte Vista Funeral Home. Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 PM with Reverend Bill McDaniel officiating. Committal Service and Interment will be held at Monte Vista Memorial Park in the Garden of Peace.

The family would like to extend their thanks to Meals on Wheels and his friends from the Johnson City Power Board for all the love and care that was shown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Washington County Johnson City Animal Shelter, 3411 N Roan Street, Johnson City, TN 37601.
