With love and deep sadness, we announce the passing of Joyce Gregory Ottinger on April 15, 2025 at Johnson City Medical Center. Joyce was born on June 12, 1931 in Bristol, VA and was the daughter of Virginia Gregory and Ray Gregory, who preceded her in death.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Teddy Allen Ottinger (LTC, US Army, Retired), her parents, her sister Carolyn Gregory Gienty, beloved cat, Abby, and family dogs and cats. Joyce is survived by her daughter Cathy Ottinger Farnum (David), son Scott Ottinger and 2 grandcats, O.C. and Scruffy.

Joyce graduated from Virginia Intermont College and East Tennessee State University. Joyce was a teacher and then served as a U.S. Army military wife for 22 years, traveling around the US and Europe. She worked at a craft shop and bookstores. Joyce enjoyed reading, watercolor painting, needlework, making baskets and many other crafts. She was a member of First UMC. She was known for her great sense of humor.

The family received friends on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 from 1:00 to 3:00 in the parlor of First United Methodist Church, 900 Spring St., Johnson City.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Joyce was such a good neighbor to us. I enjoyed learning gardening tips, and sharing book reviews from time to time. It was
always a pleasure to see her in the library, too. She was such a sweet person and always asked about my kids.

It has been my pleasure to be acquainted and help manage Ms Ottingers“ medical problems since before 2007. Most visits she made me laugh and gain a different perspective on living, ie during early scary COVID times she explained to me that she: ..."loved Covid since I do not feel forced to socialize anymore and am left alone to read..." I admired her quiet strength and endurance.
I will miss her.
