JONESBOROUGH - Joyce Hughes Garland age 89, of Jonesborough, Tennessee passed away peacefully on December 19, 2025 after a lengthy battle with dementia. She was born on September 22, 1936 to the late Roe and Bertha Hughes in Green Mountain formerly Relief, North Carolina.
Joyce spent her formative years in North Carolina, and in 1956 she married the love of her life, Arthur "Doc" Garland. They soon moved to Maryland where they started their family. They then moved to Jonesborough in 1971.
Joyce dedicated her life to raising her three beloved children and making a wonderful home for her family. She was known for her skills in the kitchen. She made the best cakes, especially her cheesecake. Joyce also enjoyed quilting once her children were grown, she also liked gardening and working in her flowers. She was a longtime member of The United Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur "Doc" Garland, children, Brian Garland, and Loretta Holtzhower, grandson, Justin Gardner, brothers, Junior Hughes, Elmer Hughes, Kimsey Hughes, Buck Hughes; sisters, Thelma Wilson, and Madeline Foster.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Sharon (Kenny) Gardner; grandchildren, Shannon (Jackie) Wilson, Michael (Ashley) Holtzhower, Jessie (Kody) Musselman, David (Jessica) Garland, step-grandchildren, Dawn (Chris) Lewis, and Eric (Katie) Holtzhower; great-grandchildren, Hank, Will, Leon, and Jaxson M., step-great-grandchildren, Jaxson L., and Abby, sister, Betty Renfro, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Joyce also leaves behind close friends Sue Hobbs and Gracie King (deceased).
The family would like to thank everyone for the many prayers for Joyce throughout her illness.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 23, 2025 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The funeral will be immediately following with Dr. Wiley Greene officiating. A graveside service will take place at Roselawn Memory Gardens on Wednesday, December 24, 2025 at 12:00pm. All attending are asked to meet at the cemetery by 11:50m.
Active pallbearers will be David Garland, Dean Wilson, James King, Jackie Wilson, Leon Musselman, and Kody Musselman. Honorary pallbearer will be Michael Holtzhower.
