Jeffrey Ardell, Ph.D., a distinguished neurocardiologist, esteemed professor, and devoted husband, father and grandfather passed away on February 12, 2025. Born on December 20, 1952, in Pueblo, Colorado, to the late Margaret and Laurence Ardell, Dr. Ardell dedicated his life to advancing the understanding of the nervous system's role in heart function.
Dr. Ardell earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Colorado College in 1975 and his Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of Washington in 1980. His academic journey led him to significant roles, including Professor of Biomedical Sciences and Vice Chair for Research at the Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City, Tennessee. In 2019, he was appointed as Professor-in-Residence in Medicine and Anesthesiology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
At UCLA, Dr. Ardell founded the Neurocardiology Research Center of Excellence, a leading institution in the field. His pioneering research on bioelectronic medicine, particularly in developing electroceuticals to treat heart failure, has left a lasting impact on the medical community.
Outside of his professional achievements, Dr. Ardell cherished his time spent outdoors, enjoying camping, boating, and making memories with his loved ones. His faith, kindness, and passion for learning and discovery were the cornerstones of his life, and he instilled these values in his family.
He is survived by his wife, Kim Sturgill Ardell of Piney Flats, TN; son Chris Ardell of Atlanta, GA; daughters Heather Johnson of Piney Flats, TN, Sarah Ardell of Mountain View, CA, and Stacey Johnson and (granddaughter) Saylor Sharp of Johnson City, TN; two siblings, Gary (Laurie) Ardell of Columbus, OH and Lynda (Mark) Tenhundfeld of Huntsville, AL; Brother in laws, Phil Sturgill (Lisa) of Johnson City, TN; Patrick Sturgill (Robin) of Johnson City, TN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to honor Dr. Ardell's life and contributions will be held on Sunday February 16 at ReNEWed Church: 213 E Center St, Kingsport, TN 37660. Pastors Winston Johnson and Bill Mullins officiating. Receiving 1:30-3PM and Service 3-4PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to ReNEWed Church (https://www.renewedchurch.net/give.html) in his memory.
Dr. Ardell's legacy as a loving husband and father, grandfather, devoted scientist, and faithful servant of God will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Arrangements have been made with Weaver Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

I worked with Jeff for the last decade and count him as one of my closest friends. He and Kim helped me through a very difficult time in my life. His perspective, optimism and unbounded support were so important to me. I loved it when he would spontaneously call me and say "Hello young man" (I am not). We talked about life as much as science. I learned so much about both from him. Jeff was a teacher both professionally and personally. His support was kind, genuine and constant. His love for his family was inspirational. He was bigger than life and a genuinely great man. I could go on and on, but everybody who knew him already knows. He is sorely missed. I am glad to have had the chance to tell him how I felt about him, although he knew. My deepest condolences to his family, who he loved so much. I regret not being able to attend the service due to injury.
