James Alvin Toney April 18, 2024
ELIZABETHTON - James Alvin Toney, age 66, of Elizabethton went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Born to the late Mary Elizabeth Toney, James was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen Marie Cable Toney; and his father Gene Byers.
James retired as a machinist at Thomasville Furniture. He loved to work and was a jack of all trades. He was dedicated to all of his jobs: as a farmer, produce manager at Save A Lot Grocery for eleven years and as a produce assistant at Ingles. A native of Washington County, James moved to Elizabethton in 1985 and was a member of Elk River Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon. Some of the many things James enjoyed were farming, fishing, working with wood projects, building cars, drag racing, gardening, cooking, and antiquing, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Elizabeth Marie Toney Jones and Michael Todd Jones of Jonesborough; two grandchildren, Ariella Elizabeth Jones and Aaron Michael Jones; a step granddaughter, Marybeth Irene Jones-Greene; his brother, Joseph Byers of Telford; four sisters, Judy Metcalf of Telford, Judith Toney of Rogersville, Susie Ray and Jenny Byers both of Telford. His special friend and neighbor, Katrina Frizzell of Elizabethton and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of James's life will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Sunday, April 21, 2024 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton. A eulogy will be provided by his daughter, Elizabeth Marie Toney Jones. The family will receive friends between the hours of 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Sunday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 22, 2024 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Joseph Byers, Michael Todd Jones, Aaron Michael Jones, David Cooper, Colton Elliott and Rob Asbury. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton at 10:15 AM on Monday to go in procession to the cemetery.
