Hazel Smith October 22, 1939 - September 4, 2024
ELIZABETHTON - Hazel Smith, 84, passed away September 04, 2024 after a prolonged battle with dementia. Hazel was born in Hickory, NC to Hester and Skylar Fulbright on October 22, 1939. She and her family have called Elizabethton/Johnson City home for over 55 years.
Preceded in death by her husband George Smith.
Survivors are sons Mike Thomas, MSgt John Smith, USAF, retired, daughter-in-law Kim and daughter Dolly Smith; two grandchildren Jeff Smith(Amanda) and Whitney Smith; two great-grandchildren, Ella, the apple of her eye, and Nick.
Hazel was well-known around Central Community as she worked at Central Elementary for 15 years before retiring in 2001. Mom loved going to garage sales and thrift stores. She also loved donating items she acquired to many schools in our area so kids and teachers would have things they needed. Mom couldn't wait until April arrived because that meant the return of her beloved hummingbirds. She faithfully fed them for over 35 years. She got so much joy watching them light on her feeders as she watched from her porch.
A celebration of Hazel's life will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 8, 2024 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. The family will receive friends between the hours of 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Sunday.
The graveside service will follow in the Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
