JOHNSON CITY - Hazel Foster Darby, 81, of Johnson City, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord after a brief illness on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
Hazel was born April 23, 1942, to the late Carl Foster and Dollie Jones Foster in Erwin, Tennessee. She graduated from Unicoi County High School. She went on to attend Elohim Baptist Bible Institute in Castile, New York and Milligan College in Elizabethton, Tennessee, earning degrees from both institutions. She met her husband Bruce in 1962, while he was serving in the Air Force, and they were married July 3, 1965.
Hazel's Christian faith was central to her life, and she encouraged others with God's love. She and Bruce were active members of Heritage Baptist Church in Johnson City. They also served as missionaries for three years in Indonesia. Hazel retired in 2005 after serving as the director of Child Evangelism Fellowship of Northeast TN for over twenty years, where she devoted herself to reaching children for Christ.
Hazel loved camping, traveling, and exploring. She also enjoyed watching a good game of golf. Most of all, she loved her family. She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be greatly missed.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 58 years, Bruce Darby; children, Eric Darby, Beth Darby, David (Jennifer) Darby, and Jonathan Darby; grandchildren, Brandan, Brooke, Bradley, and Baylea Darby; siblings, James (Jan) Foster, Carolyn Broyles, and Teresa Foster; and several nieces and nephews.
Hazel's family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home with a funeral following at 7:00 pm, under the direction of Dr. Reggie Weems and David Foster. A committal service will commence at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 27, at Evergreen Cemetery in Erwin. Those attending are asked to gather at the cemetery by 1:50 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Hazel's honor are directed to Child Evangelism Fellowship of Northeast TN (1100 N State of Franklin Rd Unit #4251, Johnson City, TN 37604).
