Gordon Edwards Obituary

Gordon "Butch" Edwards August 24, 2024

Gordon "Butch" Edwards, passed away peacefully in his home, Saturday, August 24, at the age of 72.

Butch was a cherished member of his community, always ready and willing to help anyone he could. He proudly served his country first in the United States Air Force and then in the Tennessee National Guard. He served his community outside the military as well, both by working for the city of Johnson City and by his volunteer work. He coached and assisted with baseball and softball for many years, worked alongside his wife to run the concessions stand at his children's school and by serving as a caring foster parent to many children in need of a safe and loving home. Butch never met a stranger and was always quick to offer aid wherever he could, regularly making donations to St. Jude’s.

He is preceded in rest by his beloved wife, Brenda Edwards, with whom he shared 46 loving years.

He is survived by his children, April Blankenship, Wayne Edwards, and Scott Edwards; grandsons, Cody Edwards and Marquis Davis and wife Alexus; granddaughter, Kera Edwards; as well as sisters-in-law, Pam Harbin and husband Joe, Tonya Edwards, Madison Presnell, Riley Russell, Holly Hays, and Leah Hays; alongside so many other lives he touched and blessed.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City.

Dear Family
I have many fond memories of Butch.
Once when we were moving a bunch of trailers for the military. It was cold and raining a downpour all day. When lunchtime came Butch asked if I had brought any dinner and I said no.So he sternly told me to get into the semi. Now picture this,Butch was the only man I ever knew who could drop a quarter through his wedding band. And other times I had witnessed him picking up jeep engines and placing them into the engine compartment holding them while mechanics on the topside and under the vehicle bolted them into place. So nooo I didn´t argue when he told me to climb in.
As I climbed into the truck he took a fresh loaf of bread and handed me two slices with all the fixings. Then he took out a big playmate cooler and pulled out a whole roll of baloney and cut me off a 3 inch thick slice.I preceded to tell him I didn´t want to eat all his food but he said there´s plenty. Then he said something I´ll never forget he said " what you don´t understand if you got to eat baloney EAT BALONEY"
Now I don´t think he was just talking about the meat. I think he meant in life you don´t always have what you want but you can take what you have and make the best out of it.
Or maybe he just liked Baloney, either way it was a lesson I learned that has served me well.
I wish to send my condolences to the family.Butch will be missed by us all.
