George was one of the first people we met upon moving to West Hawley, since he was a neighbor up the road, and work d at our property on Forge Hollo for years. People say he never spoke much, but I didn't find that to be true with me. He came over and plowed our driveway at a very good price. And we always spoke about things from the old days in West Hawley to the fact that he could not believe I actually wanted to be the Town Clerk in Hawley. Though he did do tons of work for the town. I've seen it. If he plowed a driveway once, that was never it. He always came back again...no charge!
Love to the Rice family and to the Deraways. Especially Austin, his best buddy.

As a child and later into my teens, I spent many a weekend sleeping over at the West Hill house with my best friend Carla. George was always there, on the land, tending the cattle and moving about the farm doing the endless chores. He was always home for dinner, and we spent many hours at the table and in front of the TV as a family watching Dukes of Hazzard and other shows deemed worthy- He was a known quantity, a formidable personality, and an unchanging actor in my world for many years. Typically quiet and stalwart, connecting with George on a personal level was not the most natural endeavor, and hey, kids just want to hang out with as little interference as possible. But still. To know George was to see the sun set on the hay when it grew tall, smell the earthy breath of a baby calf, and hide in all the secret places in the antique barns. That land, those buildings and the people he influenced will always speak to the man he was and the value he brought to our small corner of the world.... Rest in Peace Mr. Rice, see you on West Hill.

I didn't know George at all, but your beautiful obituary brought tears to my eyes. The sweet mention of his favorite chair and his dog, Sky, are the bits of human detail that make individuals so special. I'm sorry for your loss and I wish you peace and comfort during this difficult time.
