Gary Odom Obituary

Gary Odom

October 25, 1948 -

November 25, 2024

With calm skies, a tank full of faith and a tailwind of grace, Gary Odom was cleared for takeoff on November 25, 2024 to his final destination. Heaven's Tower has now received him. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his departure.

Born on October 25, 1948 to Winslow and Frances (West) Odom, Gary lived a life filled with laughter and purpose. He was a man of unwavering faith, a gentle spirit and a servant's heart. Through his words and actions, he touched all who knew him.

From Buladean, NC and attending Lamar High School, he went on to navigate a life dedicated to helping others, first as an LPN and then a respiratory therapist. He also mapped a path as part owner in Appalachian Healthcare for a number of years providing home healthcare services to his community. His passion for service led him to a 26 year career as a Firefighter with the Doe Valley Volunteer Fire Department in Mountain City, TN. He was a faithful member of Martindale Baptist Church of Johnson City, TN where he served as a Deacon, Treasurer and Sunday School Teacher.

Outside of his profession, he had a number of hobbies that took flight throughout the years. He had a deep love of history and learning, particularly the German language. He spent many Thursdays at the community center with the German Club where his love of the language brought many new friendships. He had a profound appreciation for a good book, an interest he shared with his daughter. They spent countless hours exchanging recommendations and bonding over their mutual love of literature. He also found great joy in Bluegrass music and passed on his enthusiasm by picking a tune on one of many instruments including a fiddle, a banjo, a mandolin or a dulcimer. His quick wit brightened any room with his humor and storytelling. If you knew Gary, you knew why a teddy bear never eats. And of course, his favorite past time in recent years was flying with his son. Receiving his private pilot's license was a milestone accomplishment. Whether navigating the open skies or simply enjoying the view, their time spent together was forever cherished. But most importantly, he never missed an opportunity to tell others about Jesus. His love for Jesus radiated in his actions and his mission to lead others to Christ.

Those left to honor his legacy include his devoted wife of 54 years, Helen Odom. His co-pilot and son, Eric Odom and wife Kelly, his daughter Tracie Kline and husband Ricky and his grandson Paycen Odom. In addition to his family, he shared a deep bond with his loyal dog Chloe, not just a pet but a constant companion and best friend.

With a logbook now full, so too was his life and though his journey on earth is complete, his heritage will continue to soar. He charted a course to inspire us all.

I went to respiratory therapy school with Gary. He was very kind to me and frequently bought my lunch when he knew my ends weren't meeting. He was like a Dad to much of our class. Godspeed, Gary. You have received your clearance into an endless blue sky. Fly high.

It was an honor to have known such a kind gentleman for many years. Gary´s wit was abundant and quick! He was always prepared to deliver more than one tale, some scholarly advice, or a hilarious joke. His talents were many, as were his countless friends.
Sincere condolences to all of his family.
