Erika Nolan Obituary

Erika Johanna Hilde Gerhardt Nolan, PhD

March 30, 1930 -

April 16, 2025

Erika Nolan was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, March 30, 1930.

She immigrated to the United States in 1960 with her husband, William Nolan (deceased) and her two children, Evelyn Gerhardt Ozer and Sean Foster-Nolan.

She graduated summa cum laude from the College of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois with a bachelor's degree. She was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Chicago, where she earned her master's and PhD in German literature.

Her never-ending curiosity led her to explore the creative disciplines of ballet and opera, both of which she enjoyed watching and discussing in depth. She considered Shakespeare the most influential playwright of our time and passionately researched his plays for decades.

She and her husband chose to move to Tennessee for its visually stunning landscape. She loved exploring and walking the beautiful Appalachian trails.

She was a Professor of German at Eastern Tennessee State University, and a translator for Siemens Corporation.

It is impossible to describe her notable life in mere paragraphs.

She was a trailblazer and a thought-provoking teacher.

She encouraged pushing beyond the ordinary in an effort to reach the extraordinary.

She was deeply loved by her family and friends. She will be missed.

Condolences may be sent to www.wadugger.com. Woodall-Anderson and Dugger Funeral Home, 108 W. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City, TN is serving the Nolan family.

I first got to know Frau Nolan as my German teacher when my company was bought by the giant company, Siemens. Frau Nolan (and I always called her by her formal name) taught me way more than the German language. She shared her intellectual knowledge with me on a variety of subjects. She shared stories from her past. And she spoke fondly of her various family members. I admired her intelligence and physical fitness, and her talent for interesting conversation. All my best to her family.

Erika was a close friend whose intellect I admired and whose friendship I cherished. I found in her a kindred spirit who loved the Arts and we could share our thoughts on the operas, plays, and on literature in German.

She also loved gardening and cats!

Sharing one of my favorite photos of my dear friend. I took it on our last trip together, San Francisco 2019.

Rest in peace, my friend!

I remember Erika from being a neighbor on Boone Lake and seeing her enjoy her daily walks. We had many conversations regarding her life, the current events, and German history. Erika was a kind and knowledgeable woman who challenged all to expand their knowledge. Later I would see her in town and was amazed how she did not let age interfere with her life. My thoughts are with her family while celebrating a life well lived
