Dorothy Fortune Obituary
Dorothy Toney Fortune, age 93, passed away peacefully while at the Center on Aging and Health. She was a native of Unicoi County, and the daughter of the late Hazen H. and Ruth Emerson Toney. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years. Joseph M. "Sam" Fortune in February 2000, sister Betty T. Sammons, brother Hazen H. Toney, Jr. and son-in-law Ronnie Tinker in June 2014.
Dorothy was a lifelong member of the Erwin Presbyterian Church. She was employed as a librarian for many years at Martin Chapel School.
Dorothy is survived by two sons, J.M. "Sammy" Fortune, II (Dorothy), Kenneth T. Fortune (Kim), one daughter, Beverly Tinker, grandchildren, Kari Owens, Kimberly Fortune (Blake), Amy Tinker Griffith (Brandon), and Erin Tinker Frazier (Dylan). Also surviving are two great granddaughters, Faith Tipton and Victoria Tipton, two great grandsons, Malak Estepp and Hudson Frazier, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Governor's Bend Assisted Living for their loving care and compassion for Dorothy for over three years. Also, in recent weeks Becky Allen and her team with Amedisys Hospice and the Center on Aging and Health for their excellent care.
The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Dorothy Fortune in a committal service to be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, February 13, 2025, in Evergreen Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel. Reverend Steve Rice will officiate. Those who wish to attend will meet at Evergreen Cemetery Mausoleum by 2:50 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Erwin Presbyterian Church, 105 N. Elm Ave. or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
