Darrell Woods September 21, 1934 - August 1, 2024
UNICOI CO - Darrell Woods, age 89, lifelong resident of Unicoi and Washington Counties, passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2024, after several months trying to recover from an accidental fall. Tough, resilient, loving, caring, sharing and a very hard worker is a good way to describe him. A lifelong farmer, who was still actively farming with his son, Kenny, on a century farm that had been in the same family for 120 years, he loved real estate and making deals and had a successful career with his daughter, Kathy, grandson, Kent, and his late wife, Carol. He was known for his skills in the well pump business and had done work for many in the area; a skill he learned from his father, Dan. Darrell and his brothers, Mack and Dallas, were all pilots and owned a plane for years. They could often be found over at Bill Decker Airport, parachuting and giving others plane rides. In the 1950's and 1960's, Darrell drove a race car on several dirt tracks. He served several terms on the Washington and Unicoi County Farmer's Co-op boards, elected by his fellow farmers. He was also appointed by the Town of Erwin and served several terms on the Erwin Utilities Board of Directors. In 2014, he was honored with an award from Governor Bill Haslam for his contribution to the farmer's industry. Darrell enjoyed politics and actively supported many candidates over the years. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Carol Sue, in 2014; his parents, Dan and Helen Woods; his in-laws, Leonard and Carrie Guinn; brothers, Dallas (Gail) and Mack; brothers-in-law, Jimmie Deadrick and Larry Murphy; Ira and Jenny Jones; great friends and cousins, Jerry Smith, Ted Love, Glea Broyles, Bill Henley and Bill Runion.
Darrell Woods has left behind to cherish his memory: children, Kathy (David) Harris, Kenny (Kathy) Woods; loving sisters, with whom he shared a very special bond, Barbara Deadrick, and Nancy Murphy; grandchildren, Kent (April) Harris, Jason (Pam) Harris, and Laci Woods; great-grandchildren, Kerri (Andy) Register, Mason, Evan, Eli and Ali Harris; great-great-grandchildren, Atlee and Aileen Register, Malachi Lebeau; brother-in-law, David (Janet) Guinn; and sister-in-law, Nancy Nienanst Woods.
The family would like to offer special thanks to Darrell's caregivers: Helga Hupe, Jerome Jackson, and Heather Shelton for the love and care they have provided during this difficult time.
The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Darrell Woods in a graveside committal service to be held at 2:00 pm, on Monday, August 5, 2024, in Evergreen Cemetery. Reverend Jeremy Dykes will officiate. Musical selections will be provided by Darrell's great-granddaughter, Ali Harris. Serving as active pallbearers will be his nephews, Tommy, Kim and Tony Woods, Danny Murphy, Scott and Kevin Deadrick, and David Lowe; friends, Chico Gutierrez, Willie Runion, Tony Tipton, and Andy Register. Honorary pallbearers will be his nieces, Libby Woods Smith and Debbie Lowe; best friend, Max Adkins; Henry Hampton, J.M. Harris, Pete Ferguson, Carol Shelton, Sam Phillips, Stephanie Goebell, Kay Pack, Norman Edwards, John Boy Miller, Curt McGee, Paul Farnor, Ken Mashburn, and special friends, Peggy Love and Cynthia Fox.
