Craig Sonnenberg Obituary

Craig E. Sonnenberg, 70, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. Born in Kingston, NY to Colette M. (Manusson) and Albert O. Sonnenberg, he graduated from Hamilton College in 1976 and made many lifelong friends as a member of the Chi Psi fraternity. After college, Craig became a sought after costume designer in Boston for many years, including work with the Boston Shakespeare Company, Theaterworks, and Harvard's Hasty Pudding Theatricals, before bringing his artistic talents to web design later in his career. Craig was a beloved member of the Shambhala Buddhist community where he co-led the LGBTQ group, in Boston and later Northampton, Mass. He was predeceased by his mother Colette M., his father Albert, and his dear partner of 25 years, Chuck Pacheco, who passed in 2006. In lieu of flowers, donations in Craig’s memory can be made to the Karme Choling Meditation Retreat Center in Barnet,Vt. https://www.karmecholing.org/donation/one-time. Craig's mother, Collette, was a precious friend of mine for many years. I came to know Craig best during Collette's final year or two, when he could still come faithfully from his home in Massachusetts to visit her in the nursing home where she spent her last days. He was not only sweetly solicitous of her, but also of others who were there as well. He brought photos (and took many as well) to show around the dinner table to the fellow inhabitants. He shared stories, brought kindness, cheer, joy, laughter, and a sense of being cared about to all those he met, despite his own considerable health challenges. In a local monastery (my memory fails me exactly where, but somewhere near Kingston, NY, where he would stay overnight while visiting his mother), he found great happiness, friendship, comfort, and solace each time he came for a visit. I will always remember his kind spirit.
