Clyde Carter Obituary

Mr. Clyde W. Carter

July 31, 2025

JOHNSON CITY- Mr. Clyde W Carter, 95, loving husband, father, and papaw, Boones Creek community of Johnson City, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, July 31st, at his home, following a brief illness.

Clyde was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County.

Clyde was the son of the late Lee McKinley and Mary Anne Keys Carter. Clyde was a 1948 graduate of Boones Creek High School and attended ETSC.

Clyde was a lifetime cattleman, horse and mule trader, and owned stockyards in Johnson City and Jonesborough. In 1972, Clyde took a trip to Iowa and saw a round baler in a field. He decided right then and there, he needed one of those for his farm. He had the first Round Baler shipped across the Mississippi River to East Tennessee. After many farmers decided they also needed a round baler, he started Carter and Carter Machinery. He became a Vermeer dealer in 1973. Clyde continued working six days a week until he became ill, May 27th of this year.

Clyde loved trading, first horses and mules, then hay equipment. He loved spending time with his family most, whether it be trips Out West, UT Football games, or ETSU basketball games. He was most happy spending his days at "the shop". Clyde attended Highland Church of Christ, where he loved serving as a deacon emeritus.

Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, Lee McKinley and Mary Ann Carter; wife of nearly 66 years, Betty Ann Carter; brother, Billy Lee Carter; sisters, Mary Emma Johnson, Carolyn Baird, Sara Jane Knight, Dorothy Pearl Rose Miller, and infant, Milred Carter.

Clyde is survived by his daughter, Mary Beth Carter Larimer and husband Jeff, Gray; granddaughters Jennie Pearl Good and husband Danny, Jonesborough, and Erin Brant and husband Daniel , Limestone; great-grandkids, Carter Rose and June Brant, Limestone, Charlotte Mae Good, Jonesborough, Meredith Hughes, Greeneville, Jacob Good, Jonesborough; one sister Patsy Baird and husband Henry, Morristown; several nieces and nephews. A special thank you to Clyde's caregivers, Michelle Lawson and Susan Bennett. They will forever be our family. Also, thank you to Amedisys Hospice for your loving care.

The celebration of life service will be conducted Sunday, August 3, 2025, at 7:00PM, in the Sanctuary of Highland Church of Christ, with Byron Paddock, Minister, officiating.

The family will receive friends Sunday prior to the service from 4:00-7:00PM at the church.

The graveside committal service will be held on Monday, at 10:00 AM in Highland Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jeff Larimer, Danny Good, Daniel Brant, Will Johnson, Chad Sanders, J.D Hensley, Jason Pearman, Steve Carver, Darryl Cretsinger. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert "Bo" Carter and the men of the congregation of Highland Church of Christ. Those planning to attend the graveside service are requested to meet at the cemetery by 9:50AM on Monday morning.

The family graciously welcomes flowers. Those who prefer to make memorial donations, may do so in Clyde's name to Highland Church of Christ Youth Fund, 485 Highland Church Road, Gray TN, 37615.

I dealt with Clyde & William for years. They always treated me well. They knew me by name when I walked in the door. I sure do miss Clyde.

Mary Beth, I just found out about your dad. I don't take the paper since mama passed an if I'd known of his passing I'd been there. He loved for me to whistle when I would ride my bike down the lane to deliver Mrs. Carter her mail or go help her in the garden. Lots of good memories an also all us kids playing on Sunday afternoon. Your dad, my dad, an Billy Lee would stand around talking cattle an cars alot. Again I'm deeply sorry, I know what you're going through. Mines been gone since 1984 an it's like yesterday. You never get over it, just through it. Stay strong, ask God for guidance an he will get you through. Love Jewell

I'm sorry to hear Clyde has passed. My father, Jack, had some great stories about cousin Clyde. He certainly was a corner stone of Boones Creek.

I am very sorry for your loss. I traded with Clyde for a long time. I bought my first drum mower from him when I was 23. That means I knew Clyde for 46 years as a friend and salesman. I will miss him very much. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Mary Beth and Jeff. So sorry to hear of the passing of Clyde. I have many fond memories of him. I always looked forward to his corn in the summer time and the chocolate covered peanuts at Christmas. You're in my thoughts and prayers.
