PINEY FLATS - Charles William Ledford, age 94, Piney Flats, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 8,2023. Charles was born in Buladean, North Carolina, to the late Fonzer and Edith Honeycutt Ledford.
In addition to his parents, Charles is preceded in death by his cherished wife of 64 years, Helen Pauline Street Ledford, an infant sister Leona Ledford, and two brothers R.Z Ledford and Joe Ledford. He leaves behind his son Ricky Allen Ledford and wife Stephanie, his daughter Vicki Ledford Sizemore and husband Larry, and four grandsons Garrick Ledford, Logan Sizemore, Gavin Ledford, and Dalton Charles Sizemore. Charles also leaves behind one brother, George "Dewey" Ledford, a special sister-in-law JoAnn Ledford, a special brother-in-law Tony Tipton, several special cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Charles was born during the Depression Era in 1929, drafted into the Army in 1951, and served his country during the Korean War from May 1952 until March 1953. When he left the Army in 1953, he went to work at L.L Martin Aircraft in Baltimore, MD. In 1958, he returned home to North Carolina to be with the love of his life, Helen Pauline. He went to work at Raytheon Missile Division in Bristol, Tennessee in 1958 and married Helen that same year on December 20th. They moved to Johnson City, Tennessee, and eventually settled in Piney Flats, Tennessee, where they lived together for 50 years. They were lifelong members of Keystone Freewill Baptist Church.
Charles retired from Raytheon in 1992 after 34 years of service. In 2005, he started volunteering at Mountain Home Veterans Administration. He continued volunteering there until 2017.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Brookdale Assisted Living for making his two months without his precious bride as pleasant as possible.
Mr. Ledford's family will receive friends from 11 AM until 12:30 PM on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at Keystone Freewill Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at 12:30PM with Pastor Tony Birchfield and Pastor Bill Greer officiating. The graveside service will immediately follow at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Garrick Ledford, Logan Sizemore, Gavin Ledford, and Dalton Sizemore.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Charles 's honor to Keystone Freewill Baptist Church, 110 Bettie St., Johnson City, TN, or Alzheimer's research at act.alz.org
