MOUNTAIN CITY - Robert Joseph "Bob" Miller, age 85, passed away March 28, 2024 at Mountain City Care and Rehab Center. Bob was born March 28, 1939 to the late James Wade Miller and Anna Boone Miller. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, Daniel and Ivalee Moody, Willy Moody, Joy Lee Cress, Jack Phillippi, Bill Eller, John R. Cress, John Cress Jr., and Sterling Broyles, II.
Bob was a 1957 graduate of Johnson County High School. After high school, he served three years in the United States Marine Corp., attended East Tennessee State University and Appalachian State University. He was employed in the Engineering Lab at Sperry Univac in Bristol, TN and later became the first Technology Coordinator for Johnson County Schools where he worked until his retirement in 2001. His knowledge and experience were instrumental in leading his hometown school system into the world of technology.
Bob attended First Baptist Church and was a member of the Men's Sunday School Class and the CARE "A" Team. He was also a 60+ year member of Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #243, a member of the Advisory Board for the Johnson County Senior Center and a member of the Johnson County Amateur Radio Club. He also liked to refer to himself as the chairman of the morning coffee group at McDonalds.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 56 years, Minnie Moody Miller; sister-in-law, Cloyce Eller; nieces and nephews, Vanessa Nelson, Debbie Broyles, Carol Cress, Iva and Richard Danner, James and Eileen Cress, Mike and Katie Phillippi; honorary great grandchildren, Cora Lynn and Isla Rose Bevins; several great nieces, nephews, cousins; special friends, Dick Grayson, John Payne, Amy Bradley, and a host of other friends. Also, thanks to the caring staff at Mountain City Care & Rehab Center for their loving care shown to Bob.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2024 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. with Rev. Warren Stewart and Dr. Jamie Bodiford officiating, eulogies by Dr. Katie Bevins and Dr. John Payne, and soloist by Chaplain Chris Hughes. The graveside service and burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers are David Bevins, Ricky Danner, Kevin Nelson, Sterlie Broyles, Eric Phillippi, and Wayne Ward. Honorary pallbearers are the Men's Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church, Donnie Rankins, David Snyder, Ted Trivett, Dick Grayson, Richard Danner, Scott Winebarger, Robert Sutherland, Norman Dickens, Mike Phillippi, Thomas Cook, Kenneth Oliver, Brandon Young, Bit Brown, and Terry Hodge.
For those unable to attend, the funeral service will be live-streamed on the Mountain City Funeral Home Facebook page.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Johnson County High School Robotics Team, 290 Fairground Lane, Mountain City TN 37683 and the family respectfully requests no food be brought to the home.
