Shirley Maxey Patterson, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, peacefully passed away on June 30, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Watkinsville, GA on December 24, 1936, Shirley was the daughter of Marshall and Mildred Maxey. She was truly a wonderful woman who loved her family and friends whole-heartedly.
She graduated from Watkinsville High School, now known as Oconee High School, in 1955. It was then that she demonstrated an early commitment to her education. Later in her 50s, Shirley pursued her passion for learning, earning a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Kennesaw State University, embodying her dedication to personal growth throughout her life.
Shirley's professional career was centered in real estate, with Northside Realty, where she excelled with her expertise and caring demeanor. Her genuine interest in people and her community made her a trusted advisor and friend to many. Shirley's career spanned 35 years, during which she helped numerous families find their perfect homes, leaving a lasting impact on her colleagues and clients alike.
Beyond her career, Shirley found joy in various hobbies and activities. She was an avid bridge player and cherished the camaraderie of her friends during their regularly scheduled games. Shirley's culinary skills were legendary, and she had a sense of fulfillment in preparing meals for family gatherings and social events. When she wasn't in her kitchen or playing bridge, you could often find her in her yard. She took pride in her blooming flowers, lush, green hosta, as well as the many vegetables and tomatoes she would harvest in the summer months. Her garden was a reflection of her love for nature and gardening, providing her with peace and beauty.
Community service was a fundamental part of Shirley's life. She was actively involved in Sandy Springs Christian Church, where she served as a Stephen Minister, providing care and support to those in need. She was also a member of Gainesville First United Methodist Church, where her faith and dedication further enriched the lives of others. Additionally, she was a devoted member of the Emmanuel Sunday School class.
Shirley is survived by her devoted children Ace Marshall and Mimi Marshall-Moyer, beloved grandchildren Haley Moyer, Anna Grace Marshall, Max Marshall, and Avery Marshall. Additionally, she is survived by her stepdaughter Cathie Patterson Hayes (Larry), step granddaughter Bethany Johnson (Zac), and step great grandson Van Johnson. She is survived by her sister, Betty Whatley as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is survived by numerous friends that are like family. She is also survived by her close friend and former husband, A.C. Marshall and his partner Marsha Patterson.
She is preceded in death by her late husband, Jack Patterson, whom she loved dearly, her mother Mildred Maxey, her father Marshall Maxey, and sisters Brenda Bales, Hazel Crowe, and Sybil Lucas, as well as her sister- in- law and cherished friend, Jackie Nivens. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know and love her.
A Celebration of Life to honor Shirley will be held at Gainesville First United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 6th, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you plant your favorite flower in her honor and watch it grow like her love did for everyone she had the pleasure of knowing.
Shirley Patterson's legacy of love, strength, and compassion will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched. May she rest in peace, knowing she made a profound difference in her family, community, and beyond.

I´m so sorry to hear of Shirley´s passing. My mom Marilyn Dunphy (who passed Sept 13th) was a very close friend. They were agents together at Northside back 40 years ago. They kept in touch and talked at least once a month. After mom moved to assisted living she couldn´t figure out how to use the phone so didn´t talk to her for the last 6 months or more. I wish I had known about her passing, we would have come to the service. Shirley was a great friend to me too. She sold us our house 20 years ago. I just loved her. Peace and blessings to your family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. Shirley was a special person. I grew up in Watkinsville and Shirley was a dear friend. I remember riding the bus to basketball games. She was a cheerleader and I played ball. Our friendship lasted through the years. We phoned each other often and she actually came to visit with our other friend, Martha a few years back. I now live in Kentucky. We really enjoyed catching back up.

I feel very privileged to have had such a good friend. Prayers to you and your family.

Love,
LaVerne Brumley
