Larry Hayes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hurst Scott Funeral Home on Jan. 30, 2026.
Larry Gordan Hayes, age 74, of Swords Creek, VA, passed away on January 28, 2026 at his home.

Larry was born on June 27, 1951, in Raven, VA to Lois Palmer Hays of Raven, Virginia and the late Dennie Edward Hays. He was a lifelong resident of the area. He worked as an equipment operator on gas wells for Natural Resource Services, Inc. and Permac, Inc. for 26 years. Larry was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran.

He found his greatest joy outdoors; that is where he felt most at home. An avid hunter and fisherman, he cherished time spent in nature and appreciated the quiet rewards of patience and hard work. Whether operating a road grader, tending to his vegetable garden, or working the land, he took pride in honest labor and a life lived close to earth. His hands were rarley idle and his love for the outdoors reflected the steady, dependable man he was.

Larry is survived by:

His loving wife, Deborah Hayes

Sons:

Nathan Hayes and wife, Danielle of Swords Creek, VA

Matt Hayes and wife, Lisa of Elizabethton, TN

Mother, Lois Palmer Hayes of Raven, VA

Step-Brother, James Barrow, II and wife, Nancy of Richlands, VA

One grandchild, Halle Hayes

A host of family and friends also survive. Special thanks to the nurses and staff of Legacy Hospice for their care and compassion.
