James Gerard Obituary
James Kenneth Gerard, age 62, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, with his family at his side.
Jim was born on November 3, 1963, the son of loving parents, Kenneth and Lois (Mishak) Gerard. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors, and when his children were young, could often be found putting worms on hooks, building campfires, and enjoying the water. He particularly enjoyed many summers on the river in Guttenberg, Iowa, with his family and friends.
Jim followed in his father's footsteps by making a career as an electrician in the family business. He frequently volunteered his time and expertise and could always be counted on to navigate the catwalk high above the ceiling at St. Mary's Catholic Church to replace light fixtures and fans; climb the stadium lights at Regina to change bulbs before football games; and occasionally be volunteered to hang Christmas lights outside. His service to others extended to the local blood bank, where by the time he stopped donating regularly, Jim was recognized as a 12-gallon lifetime blood donor, making a positive impact on the lives of countless strangers.
He was fiercely proud of his three sons in all their endeavors and successes. His grandchildren, McKenna and Beau, were the center of his world and his support for them will continue to be felt in all their future adventures.
Jim's faith was an important part of his life, and he found comfort and forgiveness within the walls of St. Mary's where he was a parishioner. For many years, he regularly attended adoration and served as an usher. The Church is where he found strength and courage as he quietly battled a cancer diagnosis early last year.
He will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
Jim is survived by his father, Kenneth; sons, Trent, Nick, and Owen (Shannon); grandchildren, McKenna and Beau; sisters, Amy (Steve) Kron and Laura (Rich) Smith; brother, Alan (Lori) Gerard; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois, and brother, Richard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, February 14, 2026 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Iowa City. A private family burial will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to honor Jim may be made to the Regina Foundation.
