Clayton was born on May 1, 1944, to Harvey and Maxine (Tipton) Kloss. He grew up on a farm south of Tulare, the youngest of three siblings. He graduated from Tulare High School in 1962. Following high school, he attended Hansen Mechanical School in
Fargo, ND.
He married his longtime sweetheart, Sheryl Petersmeyer, on May 23, 1965, at the Tulare Methodist Church. They shared 60 years of marriage. To this union, five children were born: Lisa, Lori, Teri, Dean, and Jodi. They hold many loving memories of time spent with their dad checking fields, pivots, cattle and pigs, and delivering DeKalb seed. Clayton was a DeKalb seed dealer for over fifty years and was always willing to help young farmers. He worked tirelessly at farming to leave a legacy for his family before he retired in 2025.
Clayton served as president of Salem UCC and the Tri-Church Parish for many years and played an intricate role in forming the Tulare United Church.
Food was an enjoyable part of his life. He was known for making the best fried eggs, calico beans, scalloped potatoes and ham, and goulash. One of the greatest joys of his life was having his grandchildren and great-grandchildren come to spend time with him.
