Dr. Jesse W. LaMonda Jr., a dedicated educator, counselor, administrator, and lifelong community servant, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026, at the age of 79. Born on December 1, 1946, in Kentucky, he was the son of the late Jesse W. LaMonda Sr. and Maewood Fields LaMonda.
Dr. Jess, as he was affectionately known, was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Clarence K. LaMonda and Dr. Gary W. LaMonda; and his beloved daughter, Cari LaMonda Brewer.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Berna Barnum LaMonda, whom he married on August 15, 1969. For the past four years, they resided together at Loch Haven Nursing Home in Macon, Missouri, where he received compassionate care in his later days.
Dr. Jess is also survived by his sons, Randolph T. LaMonda and Chad A. LaMonda, along with their spouses; his grandchildren; and his great-grandchildren, totaling 30 in number. His family was a source of immense pride and joy throughout his life.
A distinguished professional in special education and human services, Dr. LaMonda earned his PhD in Special Education from the University of Florida. His career spanned decades of impactful roles, including:
Licensed Professional Counselor (1985–1995)
Medical Group Business Manager (1983–1985)
Executive Director of a Children's Home (1980–1982)
Associate Administrator, State Agency Division of Mental Hygiene/Mental Retardation (1978–1980)
Assistant Professor of Special Education (1976–1978)
Director of Special Education (1975–1976)
Federal Grants Coordinator
Teacher for the Learning Disabled (1968–1970)
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Jess embodied selfless service. He volunteered with the American Red Cross Disaster Relief, worked as a First Responder, served as a Volunteer Commissioned Deputy Sheriff, became a Certified Hostage Negotiator and Certified Sexual Crimes Investigator, and opened his heart as a Foster Parent. His commitment to helping others in times of crisis and need left a lasting legacy in the communities he touched.
Dr. Jesse W. LaMonda Jr. lived a life defined by education, compassion, advocacy, and unwavering dedication to family and service. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his influence endures through the lives he improved and the love he shared.
In living and in death Dr. Jess's passion for education endures as his body was donated to science and will likely be used to train the next generation of Physicians. The family will hold a private service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to organizations supporting special education, disaster relief (such as the American Red Cross), or foster care initiatives, in honor of his lifelong passions.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Loch Haven Senior Living Community for their care and kindness during his time there.
