Dr. Trevor Jason Gage

January 19, 2025

JOHNSON CITY - Dr. Trevor Jason Gage, 53, of Johnson City, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family, following a courageous sixteen-year battle with cancer.

Trevor was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City. He was the son of Sherrell Boyd Gage, Johnson City, and the late Charlotte Genevieve Baer Gage.

Trevor was a 1989 graduate of Science Hill High School where he lettered as an offensive tackle on the varsity football team, proudly wearing #66. He then received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from East Tennessee State University in 1993. He went on to attend the Quillen College of Medicine, achieving his dream of receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1999. Following medical school, he completed his residency training in Pediatrics in 2002. Dr. Gage practiced Pediatrics until 2008, at which time he was diagnosed with cancer. Trevor loved being a Pediatrician, caring for the children of this region, and most of all, loved serving the community that he was born and raised in.

Dr. Gage loved his family more than anything and was a very involved father to his three children and their lives. He greatly enjoyed coaching not only his kids, but the kids of the area and having a positive impact on their lives as well. Even after his diagnosis of cancer, you would find him on a basketball court, football field, baseball field or any other sporting venue pouring his heart into teaching kids not only about the fundamentals of the respective sport, but also instilling in them the fundamentals of life.

Above all, Dr. Gage loved the Lord. He never questioned his diagnosis or the many years of suffering that came with it. Every day, he continually praised the Lord for allowing him yet another day on earth with his family. He saw each day as being a blessing from above and strived to witness to as many people as possible. It was his faith that guided him and gave him strength through the past 16 years and was a source of encouragement to his family throughout his journey.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the many physicians, nurses and medical staff who played a role, along with God's grace, in keeping Trevor here for the past 16 years.

In addition to his mother Charlotte, Dr. Gage was preceded in death by his brother Charles "Chad" Gage in 1981, his maternal grandparents C.A and Genevieve Saltz Baer, his paternal grandparents, Farrell and Edna Gray Gage, and his father-in-law COL (Ret.) James Martin Burton.

In addition to his father Sherrell, Trevor is survived by his loving wife of nearly thirty years, Dr. Jodi Burton Gage; three children, Chadwick Burton Gage (fiancé, Chrislyn Shuford), Kaelyn Beth Gage, and Jason Grant Gage, all of Johnson City; mother-in-law, Judith Eloise Burton, Johnson City; sister-in-law, Jamelle Lyn Burton, Johnson City.

The funeral service celebrating the life of Dr. Trevor Jason Gage will be conducted Sunday, January 26, 2025, at 4:00 P.M., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends Sunday prior to the service from 2:00-4:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.

Dr. Trevor was my children´s doctor until his lovely wife took over for him. My daughter had a medical issue and he was amazing with her. He picked her up at just a few weeks old and talked to her, rocked her , held her with the utmost care. His compassion for children was unmatched. It was obvious to me in that moment that he was not only a physician, but a gentle, caring, and an amazing human being. That memory is one that I will always treasure. A beautiful man with an incredible legacy he leaves behind. I am keeping Dr. Jodi and her sweet children in my prayers.

Trevor was a precious patient of mine for many years till ill health took me away from NE Tennessee. He was struck by advanced disease in early adulthood but with determination, doggedness, family support, Jodi's care and love and above all, God's will and blessing he steered his life through difficult challenges with a positive attitude and grit. Jodi was with him throughout his illness. I used to always talk about Trevor amongst oncology circles as a wonder considering the long years he lived with advanced disease Truly a miracle blessed by the Lord!
May the Lord provide Jodi and the children guidance and care.
