Teresa Cox Obituary

Teresa (Terry) Joy Cox

February 25, 2025

Teresa (Terry) Joy Cox, beloved daughter, wife, sister, and aunt, died peacefully in her sleep on February 25. Terry graduated from both SHHS and ETSU and had a successful career as a speech/language pathologist. She worked in home health, and her goal was to make every patient laugh at least once during every session. After marrying her loving husband, Robin Cox (the best thing in her life), they lived in NC, TN, MD, and WA before retiring to Maryville, TN. Among the countless happy memories of Terry are the fabulous 4th of July parties she and Robin hosted; traveling with family to many parts of the USA; enjoying fine restaurants with a good cocktail beforehand; her delicious lasagna dinners; trying to beat her (usually unsuccessfully) in games of Rook; and remembering fondly the heartfelt greeting cards she sent every birthday and holiday.

Terry was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Edna Joy, and by a special niece, Michelle Roberts.

Survivors include her best friend and loving husband, Robin Cox, and her siblings: Henry Joy (Flora), Bob Joy (Molly), Sharon Gibson, Bill Joy, Mary Roberts, and Barbara Burleson. She is also survived by sister-in-law Carla (Dan), and brother-in-law Shawn (Pam). Her nieces and nephews meant everything to her: Ryann, Kelley, Jason, Brooke, Robert, Chris (Kristen), Anna (Doug), and Daniel (Jaclyn)-as did great nieces and nephews: Cora, Carter, Eloise, Molly, Sophie, Emerson, and Caris.

A private family celebration of life will be Sunday March 2 in Maryville. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries, P.O. Box 3310, Knoxville, TN 37297, or National Audubon Society, 225 Varick St. 7th floor, NY, NY 10014.

I didn't meet Terry but three times in the past 10 years, but every time I was in her presence she always made me feel like I had been in the family forever and that we were best friends. Her spirit was so contagious that I, a sort of introvert, opened up immediately and it was like I had known her all my life. I was always amazed when Shawn and I would receive greetings cards from her. I could depend on receiving one for every occasion and so thoughtfully picked. I will remember her for her determination to always be positive and the great love she deposited in my heart each time I was with her.

Dear Joy Family,
Sharon and I met at South Junior High and our friendship continued to SHHS and then being in each other's wedding. I was an only child and being around the "joyful" Joy home was so exciting. Terry was always so sweet and happy and I feel sure she will be missed terribly by her spouse and her siblings. God bless each and every one of you,

Henry and the Joy Family:
My deepest condolences to each of you while y´all adjust to losing Teresa. It is at times like this that I regret the
Cowell/Joy family didn´t have any connection other than briefly seeing one another at church over seventy years ago.
May God bring loving comfort as you process your sorrow.

I am saddened by this news. Terry was a wonderful memory of SHHS and I was just discussing her recently. Funny how our memories come flooding back to our youth. My condolences to her spouse and extended family.

I am so sad to hear of such a great loss. My memories of Terry were ones that included incredible humor, zeal for life and loyalty to her friends and family. I first met Terry in grade school. We all knew that she was such a special person. Memories abound of Girl Scouts, fun times both in and out of school and her gleefulness, even in the face of challenges. May Terry´s memory forever be for a blessing.

I am so sorry to hear of Terry´s passing. I remember fondly when she came to South Side Elementary School as a transfer student and fit right in with her bright smile and contagious personality. We continued to attend South Junior High and Science Hill High School together. To her family, please accept my sincere condolences and prayers.
