Clara Sue Williams Captain

Sue Captain died peacefully at her home in Kinston, NC on June 18, 2022. In her last few weeks, she was surrounded by her loving family and her yard full of summer flowers and tomatoes. She was born and raised in Jonesborough, Tennessee. She attended Jonesborough High School and then East Tennessee State University. She earned a Master's in Library Sciences. She started work at Southwest Virginia Community College as a librarian. By the time of her retirement, she had developed the expansive technology services center there.

She grew up on a working cattle farm with four younger siblings: Jan Williams, Alex Williams, Beth Williams and Dottie Reed. Her parents were George A and Isabel Williams. One daughter, Judy Captain, preceded her in death. Judy died at age 42 from ovarian cancer. Her surviving daughter, Jill Captain, lives with her husband in Bethesda, Maryland. Sue is survived by 6 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters.

With her experience on the farm and her work as a librarian, Sue brought a love of reading and gardening to her children and grandchildren. Even during her illness, Sue read voraciously and had a yard full of flowers and vegetables. She was a devoted grandmother to her six grandchildren. She was an intrepid traveler, including several Caribbean vacations with all 6 of her grandchildren.

For many years, the entire Williams family, including the Matriarch Isabel, all 5 of the Williams siblings and a growing cohort of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, vacationed at Emerald Isle, North Carolina. Sue's greatest contribution to those vacations at the beach was her assortment of games, books and activities she brought every year.

One of her proudest professional achievements was that she developed many technology centers in rural southwestern Virginia when internet was first being introduced. This allowed local crafters to gain a wider audience for their work.

There will be a memorial service at Bethesda United Methodist Church on Monday, April 21st at 11 am. The service will be livestreamed and can be watched at the following link. https://youtube.com/live/bsImW_DZjCo?feature=share

My sweet friend, you were a joy and a pleasure to know. As the years passed and distance between us grew longer, I never forgot the laughter and the memories we shared. You were a very important person in my life. You were a mentor, a confidante and a friend. You will always be remembered with fondness, and I will always smile when I think of you. My condolences to this family for their loss.
