JOHNSON CITY - Mr. Stephen Edward "Steve" Brown, 81, Johnson City, passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at the Mountain Home VA Center recovering from hip surgery.
He was the son of the late Dr. Dalton Milford Brown and Thelma Patterson Brown.
He graduated from University High School in 1961 where he ran track. He attended college at ETSU where his late father was a Professor & Head of the Biology Department from 1926 to 1952. Steve was a member of the ETSU Track mate Sports Car Club where he won numerous races in his MG-A roadster.
He entered Navy Basic Training at Great Lakes, IL in 1966. He graduated with distinction and first in his class from Interior Communications Naval Training Center in 1967. He was Platoon leader of Company 355. He sailed on the USS Shangri-La, an aircraft carrier, until he ended his Naval career in 1970. He worked at Hammond Organ Co. and Phil Bachman Toyota until opening his own automotive repair shop on April 1, 1980 as co-owner with Dennis Huffine of East TN Foreign Car Service. After retiring he enjoyed mowing, weed eating his 5 acres, working on old cars, tinkering with guns and loved eating at all the family gatherings.
In addition to his parents Steve was preceded in death by his brother David Sinclair Brown.
Those left to cherish his memory are his son David J. Brown, wife Laura, children Brett & Taylor Lashlee; twin daughters, Mikki Brown, wife Mary Reagan, Missi Brown Emmert, husband Rodney; Proud Pap to grandchildren, Joseph Dalton Emmert, wife MacKenzie and Brooklin Michelle Emmert; his neighbors of 45 years, the Turbyfields and Townsends. Margaret Townsend would meet him at the fence with dinner every week.
The family of Mr. Brown will receive friends from 12 to 1:15 pm on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Morris Baker Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 1:20 pm with Pastor Aaron Henson officiating. The graveside service with military honors will immediately follow at 2 pm at Monta Vista Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be Dalton Emmert, Garret Graves, David White, Ed Haines, Will Vinson and Jody Lewis.
Honorary Pallbearers are the doctors, nurses, and entire staff at the VA Medical Center that took such excellent care of him over the years, especially his favorite, Dr. Booher.
