JOHNSON CITY - Shirley Steele Rust, age 86 of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 15, 2023 at NHC Healthcare following a lengthy illness. She was born on May 27, 1937 to William Steele, Sr. and Pansy Leona Steele in Richlands, Virginia. Shirley was a lifelong Christian, devoted wife, sister, aunt and friend. She deeply cared for those in her life. She never met a stranger and enjoyed everyone. She loved to laugh, explore and travel.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Rust; three brothers, Vinson Steele, William Steele, Jr. and Doug Steele; and one sister-in-law, Phyllis Steele.
Shirley is survived by three sisters: Peggy Hawthorne of Atlanta, Georgia, Katye Ramey of Pounding Mill, Virginia and Bonnie Niemi of Bristol, Virginia, two brothers: Buddy Steele and wife, Joan, of Knoxville, Maryland and Jim Steele and wife, Judy of Maryville, Tennessee, two sisters-in-law: Linda Steele and Mary Steele of Cedar Bluff, Virginia and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted, Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at 12:00 pm at Tetrick Funeral Services with visitation from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. She will be buried at Mountain Home National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org in memory of Shirley Steele Rust.
