JOHNSON CITY - Shirley M. Mitchell, 91, of Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord on July 9, 2023. Shirley was born on July 12, 1931, in Berkeley, California. She was the daughter of the late Chester and Selma (Hansen) Powell.
Shirley worked as a secretary in naval operations, where she would meet and marry her husband of 62 years, Donald Mitchell. Donald's Navy career would bring Shirley and family to many new places over the years. Shirley and her family would live in many different places including California, Hawaii, Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia. She loved to explore with her kids to learn history wherever the military brought them. Don would retire in 1975 and chose Tennessee as their new home, as they loved to camp here.
Shirley attended the Greenville Seventh Day Adventist Church until her health no longer allowed for it. She loved gardening, collecting dolls, tea pots and tea sets. She is remembered as being a wonderful mother and homemaker while her husband Don was deployed.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Chester and Selma (Hensen) Powell and brother, Richard Powell. She is survived by her loving husband, Donald Mitchell; her children, Kathy Shelley, Don Shelley, Karen (Jeff) Davis, Daniel Mitchell and Dennis (Bridgett) Mitchell; sister, Patricia Hawkins; several grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
