JONESBOROUGH - Sharon Elaine James King, 81, Jonesborough, transitioned from her earthly life on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Lakebridge, A Waters Community, following a lengthy illness.
She was born on December 22, 1943, and was raised on a farm in Randolph County, Arkansas near the town of Ravenden Springs. Sharon graduated from Arkansas State University with a Master's degree in English. She taught English at the junior high school, high school, and college levels.
Sharon was an avid reader of mystery books, excelled in word puzzles and was very skilled at crocheting. After retirement as a teacher, she did volunteer work at various places. She loved animals and they were attracted to her. Sharon leaves behind three cats. She often spoke the phrase, "Life gets complicated when you get past eighteen." One of Sharon's proudest accomplishments was having climbed to the summit of Mount Washington, the tallest mountain in the Northeastern United States. She also took pride in being an excellent free throw shooter on her high school basketball team.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Robert Stephen King; son, Jeffrey Warren King; grandchildren, Dylan, Lydia, and Theodore King; niece, Elizabeth Stinebaugh; cousins, Linda Glenn, Carol "Dusty" Price, Nancy James Shanklin, and Jim Hass; brother-in-law, Richard King; sisters-in-law, Linda King, Sara Bishop, and Jessica Herchenroder; her close friend of many years, Hazel Marie Campbell; and many distant relatives.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Remmel and Geraldine Henry James and sister, Patsy James Stinebaugh.
The family would like to thank Avenues Home Care, especially caregiver Felica Saults, Johnson City Medical Center, Four Oaks Healthcare Center, Lakebridge, A Waters Community, and Amedisys Hospice Care.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 11, 2025, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date in northeast Arkansas with a burial of Sharon's ashes at the White Cemetery next to the farm in Arkansas where she grew up.
