Roy Cowal Obituary

Roy F. Cowal

October 21, 2024

GRAY - Roy F. Cowal, 86, Gray, passed away on Monday, October 21, 2024, at his residence.

He was born in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, and was a son of the late Daniel and Julia Luchug Cowalchuk.

Roy was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He worked in the leather industry for many years and was known for being an excellent colorist. Roy knew his leather!

He enjoyed traveling, especially on European river cruises. Roy loved to dance. When he was younger, he was an avid hockey player but later found much happiness in hiking. He joined a hiking club and hiked along many of the Appalachian Trails.

In addition to his parents Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Taylor Cowal.

Survivors include his daughters, Virgina Cowal and Carol Bergmann; son, David Cowal; brothers, Norman Cowal (Sandy) and Ron Cowalchuk (Sue Green); sister, Barbara Cordell (Robert); significant other, Martha Sue Headlee; several nieces and nephews.

The celebration of life service will be conducted on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. from the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City with Rev. Ken Lytton and Rev. Ginger Isom, officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

In-lieu-of flowers memorials may be made to Washington County Johnson City Animal Shelter at wcjcanimalshelter.org or Unicoi County Animal Shelter at PO Box 223 Erwin, TN 37650.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Amedisys Hospice for all the care they gave to Roy.

Roy & Dorothy were the first neighbors we met when we moved to this development 17 years ago. They made us feel like family. We helped him get thru Dorothy's passing. We were so happy when Roy introduced us to Sue. She was just what he needed. We enjoyed watching their love evolve & had many fun times together. We chose to remember all the good times we had rather than the sad recent events. Roy will always have a special place in our hearts.

Dear Cowal Family and Martha Sue,
Roy led many wonderful Sunday afternoon hikes for Mid-Appalachian Highlands Club. Carpooling with him in his van(s) was as much fun as the hikes. I think that he got that nice, new van just to carpool us around.
There was one after-hike event of a big band performance on the lake at Winged Deer Park. To our delight, he and Martha Sue danced. They were very talented, and all of us wished for an encore!
Roy was very committed to helping in the community, and spent dedicated hours working with the food bank.
I am very honored to have known him, have hiked with him, and to have called him my friend.
We will all miss him.

Roy was a very kind and special person. It was my honor to be called his friend. I keep all in my thoughts and prayers who are missing him. I will.
He was always kind to my fur babies and they knew Roy was a wonderful person.
