JOHNSON CITY - Ray Edward Markland, age 94, of Johnson City, Tennessee went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 12, 2024 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Elk Park, North Carolina, a son of the late Ed Markland and Charlotte Fields Markland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Gay Arnold, Janelle Buchanan, and Wynnona Holtsclaw.
Ray was a Veteran of the United States Army and having been the only son of his family was given the option to leave the military, but he said no he wanted to serve his country. He was a member of Central Church of Christ where he helped in printing projects for the church. He had worked for the Johnson City Press and then opened his own Printing Company. He was a handyman who loved to repair anything and built many things throughout his life. He owned an El Camino that he showed in many car shows having won many awards.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Betty Hipp Markland; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 16, 2024 from 2:00PM until 3:00 PM at Central Church of Christ, 2722 E. Oakland Avenue, Johnson City, TN. Funeral Service will follow at 3:00 PM with Minister Tim Hall officiating. Committal Service and Interment will be held Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at 11:00AM in the Mountain Home National Cemetery, 53 Memorial Avenue, Mountain Home, TN with military honors to be rendered by the DAV Chapter #39 Honor Guard of Bluff City, TN and members of the Army National Guard.
