WATAUGA - Phyllis E. Hathaway, 73 of Watauga, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, October 4, 2023 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a native of Los Angeles, CA but had lived in Washington County most of her life. She was a registered nurse having worked at Johnson City Medical Center. Phyllis attended Canah Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Erwin. She loved crocheting and going to church. Phyllis enjoyed getting out and riding around with her boyfriend, Joe looking for deer. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and world. She also enjoyed shopping for them and spending time with each and everyone of them. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Murphy Gosnell and Margaret Simmons Gosnell.
Survivors include her daughter, Becky Austin and her husband, Donald of Watauga; her boyfriend, Stanley Joe Campbell of Unicoi; a brother, James Gosnell of Columbus, GA; her grandchildren, Rebecca Austin and her Fiance, Chase Poarch, Kathryn Austin Copas and her husband, Bob, D.J. Austin, Levi Austin, Brianna Austin, Aaron Austin and Hannah Austin; two great granddaughters, Marleigh Diane Austin and Daisy Marie Copas; also her best friend, Kathryn Forbes.
Graveside services for Phyllis will be conducted at 2:00 PM Monday, October 9, 2023 in the Washington County Memory Gardens with Pastor Mark Simmons officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM at Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City then proceed to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from the family and friends.
