Pegge Baughcum April 12, 1934- June 4, 2024
LAKELAND, TN - Pegge Chappell Baughcum, 90, passed away Tuesday June 4th, 2024. She transitioned peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. She was of Christian faith and a member of Highland Heights Presbyterian Church, Cordova, TN.
Pegge was born in Johnson County, TN to the late Oscar W. and Anna T. Brinkley Chappell. Growing up, she learned the value of hard work by waiting tables at her uncle's restaurant at age 12, caring for others, and by helping raise her younger twin brother and sister.
She attended nursing school at Johnson City Memorial Hospital and graduated as a Nurse Anesthetist from Wake Forest University. Her career of service to patients, doctors and hospitals spanned more than 30 years as she "ran the roads" of Norh Carolina,
One of her greatest passions involved mission trips to a Zambian village of Mwandi, Africa, where she not only helped provide electricity to the local hospital, but also helped build a new hospital. Her involvement in other improvement projects in Mwandi included building a church, and most recently an oxygen plant for the hospital.
Pegge will be remembered as a generous and loving person and always up for an adventure. She was a "pistol" and always filled a room with laughter. She put her heart and soul into any project she took on and always made them successful. She was a kind and caring person who loved to help others. She enjoyed playing piano, feeding the birds, and entertaining. She loved animals and was a long-time supporter of the North Carolina Zoo Society and a Docent at the Memphis Zoo.
In addition to her parents, Pegge was preceded in death by her husband John Martin "Marty" Baughcum and her brother Billy Chappell Sr.
She is survived by her beloved sister, Betty Steed, of Lakeland, TN. She is also survived by nieces and nephews: Audrey Cline, Andra Steed, Shannon Roberts, Cynthia Chappell and Billy Chappell Jr; as well as a great niece and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Monday, June 10th, 2024, at 1:00 P.M. at Hux & Lipford Funeral Home in Mountain City, TN. A celebration of life will be held later at Highland Heights Presbyterian Church, Cordova, TN.
