Patricia "Patty" Brooks McInturff
July 8, 2025
Patricia "Patty" Brooks McInturff passed away on July 8, 2025, at the Johnson City Medical Center, after a brief but bravely fought battle with breast cancer. Known as Patty or Pat by all who knew and loved her, other nicknames later emerged, such as the "Pretty PTA Lady," during her years of volunteering at Woodland Elementary School, to more loving nicknames such as "Nosey P" during her children's teenage years. Her favorite title of all became Nana. Those who knew her well also knew you were never to call her Patricia!
She and Carl and their family were members of First Christian Church, Johnson City, Tennessee.
Patty was the daughter of the late Shelton "Wade" Brooks and Dorothy "Dot" Hilliard Brooks, of Bristol, Virginia. She was raised in State Street Church of Christ where she was active in Sunday School and later as a volunteer during her teenage years and often regaled her family with memories of vacation Bible school, church camp, and her stint as a Candy Striper.
Patty and Carl told the story of their first meeting at the Tennessee High School Stone Castle in 1966. Both had their younger brothers in tow and Patty had been stood up for a blind date. After Carl's friend introduced them, legend has it they were holding hands by halftime. This Virginia High Bearcat and her Tennessee High Viking would go on to date for 8 years before marrying in 1975.
Following her graduation from Virginia Intermont College, where she served as the Vice President of the Freshman class, Patty moved to Washington, DC, to live with Carl after their nuptials, where she worked for the Department of Energy for three years before they moved home to begin their family. Patty was the Secretary of the Political Science Department at East Tennessee State University before taking over as Carl's bookkeeper. She spent more than two decades as the Office Manager of Carl and Christy's law firm, McInturff & McInturff PLLC.
Patty volunteered at her children's schools throughout their educational tenures, including serving as President of the Woodland Elementary PTA and Co-President with Carl of the Liberty Bell Middle School PTSA, chaperoning two bus trips with the Science Hill High School Choir to New York and Toronto, and ushering and attending more choral and band concerts and sporting events than one could count. Patty was front and center for the grandchildren as well, be it on the golf course, tennis court, theatre, chorus, or anything else they might be interested in that week. She loved hosting cousins' sleepovers and attending Girl's Days on the weekend. Patty also prided herself in hosting Christmas Day festivities annually for all sides of the family.
In addition to her parents, Patty was predeceased by her daughter, Sarah Ann McInturff, and her father-in-law, Robert "Bob" Nathaniel McInturff, II.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of fifty plus years, Carl McInturff, include her children, Christy McInturff Huret and husband, Steve, and Robert "Rob" Nathaniel McInturff, III, and wife, Krissi; grandchildren, Carl "Mac" Emanuel McInturff, III, Reagan Claire Huret, and Theodore "Ted" Denton McInturff; brother, Jeff Brooks, of Bristol, Virginia; brother-in-law, Patrick McInturff, of Knoxville, Tennessee; mother-in-law, Ann McInturff, who often refers to Patty as the daughter she never had; two special nieces, Candi Brooks Grooms and Jennifer McInturff Mezick; and several nieces and nephews she loved to dote on. Patty also considered her friends, Susan Skeen, Teresa Rankin, and her children's in-laws, Terry and Jeanette Huret and Tim and Janice Denton, family.
