Norma Jean Baskett Whitehead August 12, 2024
JOHNSON CITY - Norma Jean Baskett Whitehead, 82, Johnson City, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2024, at her home surrounded by her family, after a short battle with cancer.
Norma Jean was born in Jonesborough and was a lifelong resident of Johnson City. She was a daughter of the late Everett Rowe and Agnes Rowena Baskett.
Norma Jean was a 1960 graduate of the ETSC Training School.
She worked as a machine operator at Klopman Mills (Burlington Industries) for more than thirty years until it's closing, then worked at Bosch Industries for several more years.
Norma Jean was a lifelong member of First Freewill Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir, and was known for having the most beautiful alto voice.
She loved deeply her family and friends, and always had a smile for everyone. Norma Jean especially loved children, and enjoyed doting on her grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Raymond Baskett and his wife Jean, a sister, Velma McIntosh, and sister-in-law, Mary Baskett.
Norma Jean is survived by her two children, Angela Carr, Elizabethton, David Whitehead and wife Sherry, Johnson City; three grandchildren, Donny Douglass, Okaloosa, FL, Bethany Whitehead Burns and husband Marcus, Johnson City, Drew Whitehead, Jacksonville, NC; two great-grandsons, Julian and Dylan Douglass; one brother, Harold Baskett, Jonesborough; three sisters, Ruth Fox, Evelyn Baskett, Betty Branch and husband Jim, all of Johnson City; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Norma Jean will be conducted Friday, August 16, 2024, at 1:00 P.M., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Dr. Kenneth Grindstaff, officiating.
Graveside committal service will follow in Washington County Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
The family will receive friends Friday prior to the service from 11:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.
