Norma Mays Obituary

Mrs. Norma Burger Mays

January 14, 2025

JOHNSON CITY - Mrs. Norma Burger Mays, of Johnson City passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at the age of 92. She was a daughter of the late Floyd E. and Pearl Fannon Burger.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Burger and a brother-in-law, Glen Honeycutt.

She is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 67 years, Paul Mays, of the home; a sister, Linda Sue Burger Honeycutt, of Lantana, Florida and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Norma was the epitome of all things good in the world. She lived by the creed of doing the right thing through loyalty, compassion, generosity and devotion. She had strong faith and was a member of the United Methodist Church.

A native of Johnson City, she had lived her childhood years in Greene County where she developed an appreciation for family through strong ties with her grandmother and other family members.

Norma retired from the Veterans Administration where she held positions in various departments, including Human Resources and Cardiology. She also held previous positions at East Tennessee State University where she worked for the Chairman of the Department of Biology and the Dean of the Department of Arts and Sciences. She later was employed in the Postmaster General's office in Washington DC, where she and her husband Paul lived during the 1980's.

A memorial service in honor of Norma will be held at a later day per her wishes.

Norma and Paul have been family friends for decades. She was my father Dr TP Copeland's secretary when he was Chair of Biology in the 1960s and 70s and I would often sit by her desk after school. Norma was the epitome of all things good. Paul, I am so sorry for your loss but happy that you two had so many decades together- Becky Copeland
